Christopher Ward is easily one of the most adventurous and innovative names in the indie watch game. The Bel Canto, Loco and Lumiere all push the boundaries of modern, approachable watchmaking.

But don’t let that overshadow the British brand’s talent for producing classic, dependable watches that can be worn every day, with anything. It’s what put them on the map, and the newly refined Sealander Automatic might be the brand’s most impressive release yet in terms of pure value.

As mechanically impressive as Christopher Ward can get, designing a go-to, foundational watch that can last a lifetime if taken care of for under $1,500 is the ultimate achievement.

The updated Sealander Automatic checks every box with a look somewhat inspired by Rolex, but distinct enough to be unmistakably a Christopher Ward.

It features a narrower version of the brand’s elongated arrow, almost alpha-style hour hand, accompanied by the standard fencepost minute hand and needle seconds hand, which has lost its Trident counterweight for a cleaner look. All three are polished, with white Super-LumiNova inlays on the hour and minute hands.

An applied dual-flag brand logo with vertical brushing sits below 12:00, and the stylized Sealander wordmark is printed opposite it. New applied, faceted, tapering indices with polished frames and white lume inlays make up the hour track, save for a framed date window standing in for 6:00.

The Light-catcher case, available in 36mm and 39mm, retains the same shape but loses the crown guard and cuts a slimmer silhouette at just 10.6mm and 10.9mm tall, respectively. It also adds a polished bezel for a dressier appearance.

More power!

Functionally, the biggest improvement to the Sealander Automatic is an upgraded engine. Christopher Ward is the first brand I’ve come across to use the Sellita Caliber SW200-2 Power+ automatic movement.

This new generation of one of the most trusted wholesale movements in the industry packs a significantly upgraded power reserve of 65 hours, up from 38 in the standard SW200, while maintaining the same 4Hz beat rate and an in-house calibrated accuracy of -5/+12 seconds per day.

Linked in

Christopher Ward debuts a new tool-free bracelet link removal system, called iLink, with the Sealander update. It is incorporated into both the three-link Bader and five-link Consort steel bracelets.

Links can be removed with the press of a button, and then snapped back into place, saving time and frustration with the most tedious part of owning a steel bracelet.

Pistachi-oh my

The Sealander Automatic features a new lacquered dial, available in five colors at launch. Both sizes come in black, white and sky blue, while a faded pink is exclusive to the 36mm case, and a pistachio green only comes in 39mm.

The three standard colors are perfect for daily wear, but the pink and pistachio offer great options to spice up a growing collection.

Availability and pricing

Christopher Ward’s new and improved Sealander Automatic is available now for $1,150 on a brown leather pin buckle strap, $1,535 on a fitted rubber dive strap, $1,620 on the iLink Bader three-link steel bracelet and $1,675 on the iLink Consort five-link steel bracelet.

Even topped out with the Consort, my personal choice for strap options, the new Sealander Automatic offers incredible cost-per-wear value and is one of the best all-purpose watches available for under $2,000.
