This Sub-$1,000 Watch Has a Feature You Usually Only See on Five-Figure Watches

There is no shortage of value-driven watch brands these days, but one of the most consistently surprising and impressive has to be China’s Ciga Design.

The upstart indie brand shocked the world when it won a GPHG Award in 2021 for its innovative Blue Planet watch, and it has consistently put out more creative and unexpected horological creations ever since.

Now, Ciga Design has launched its first new watch of 2026, and with it comes a new complication for the brand that’s typically reserved for watches costing five or six figures.

Ciga Design’s new watch is the Time Cipher, a Miyota 9015-powered automatic featuring an in-house designed wandering hours module.

Wandering hours complications, which eschew a traditional handset for (usually) rotating hour discs that move around the dial, have been having a bit of a moment of late in high-end watchmaking.

Urwerk is probably best-known for the complication, using it in some form on most of its watches and last year bringing the feature to its collab with Ulysse Nardin. Audemars Piguet resurrected and reimagined its Starwheel complication in 2022 in its Code 11.59 line, and last year, H. Moser & Cie. introduced a unique flying hours complication to its Pioneer. These watches are all priced between $40,000 and $125,000.

Ciga Design’s Time Cipher is just a hair cheaper, with an SRP of … wait for it … $899. No, that price isn’t missing any zeroes.

It goes without saying that the Time Cipher doesn’t come close to approaching the quality and craftsmanship of those aforementioned brands, but that’s not the point. The point is that 900 bucks for an original wandering hours mechanical watch is insanity, regardless of what brand is making it.

The Time Cipher’s take on the complication features a large, openworked, centrally mounted minute hand with an exposed gear sporting the brand’s name at the center. The tip of this large hand features a chamfered and Geneva-striped tip that tracks the minutes, with the CNC-machined, raised, high-contrast minute track representing the only marks on the Super Black dial, which absorbs 99.3 percent of visible light.

The hours are represented on the same hand as the minutes and are displayed on a rotating disc. A fixed pointer in the center of the hand points to the current hour, which is always in motion … or, you know, wandering.

To read the time, you first locate the current hour on the disc using the pointer in the center of the dial, then look at the tip of the hand to see where it lines up on the minute track. It’s pretty simple once you get used to it, with the Super Black dial providing a nice, distraction-free background for the whole affair. The hours, hour pointer and minute pointer are also lumed with dark green Super-LumiNova, providing some visibility in the dark.

The case is also unique. It’s a lugless, UFO-type design in stainless steel measuring 45mm across and 11.8mm thick. It’s topped by a domed sapphire crystal and features a display caseback. The case is fully mirror-polished, save for two cutouts on each side that are microblasted, adding some visual intrigue.

Water resistance is a solid 50m, and the included strap is made of premium-looking black FKM rubber with a hidden deployant clasp in stainless steel.

Pricing and availability

There are two versions of the Ciga Design Time Cipher. “Silver” is in plain stainless steel, while the “Carbon” option features a black-coated case. That’s the one to get, in my opinion, as it enhances the “mystery” element of the lone wandering hours hand at the center of the dial.

As mentioned up top, the Ciga Design Time Cipher is an impossibly inexpensive $899, which drops to an even more absurd $749 for U.S. customers if you sign up for the brand’s emails and place your order during the current preorder window. A $50 deposit is required to secure your order, with the rest due when the watch officially launches on January 26.
