On May 22, The Mandalorian and Grogu movie debuts in theaters, wrapping up the Star Wars phenomenon that started with Disney+’s The Mandalorian all the way back in 2019.

Why is that relevant, you might ask? Because the Citizen Attesa Mandalorian Beskar is actually a tie-in watch launched ahead of the movie’s release, although you might not know it by looking at it.

And that’s a very good thing, as it eschews cheesy branding in favor of a showcase of premium materials and convenient, utilitarian functionality.

This is the way

Most of the time, movie and other pop-culture tie-in watches are, in a word, gaudy. They’re often highly overbranded and, as a result, pretty ugly. It’s rare that they’re done well, especially when they’re so obvious (Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, interestingly, is a recent flick that skillfully offered more subtle options).

It’s to Citizen’s credit that they went much more understated with this watch. In fact, the only really clear branding is on the caseback, which features a Mandalorian-themed helmet graphic and text engraving, though it also has a Mythosaur icon on the crown and a dagger on the reverse side of the seconds hand.

There is another reference, although it is purely stylistic: the dial and the bracelet’s central links have a DLC coating that mimics the wavy pattern of Beskar steel, the material used to craft Din Djarin’s armor. However, the real-life material found under that coating, as well as on the rest of the case and bracelet, is very real.

This watch is crafted from Super Titanium, a proprietary, specially treated material that’s 40 percent lighter than conventional stainless steel while being five times harder. That makes it about as close to Beskar as possible in real life. It also makes for an extremely lightweight, durable, scratch-resistant and all but impervious to corrosion.

Style and construction aside, this is also an extremely functional watch jam-packed with utility. At its heart, it has a reliable, trusty H800 Eco-Drive movement that’s solar-powered, so you never have to worry about winding it up or replacing the batteries.

That movement, along with keeping normal time, also makes the watch’s other complications work, like the date window, weekday calendar, 12- and 24-hour timekeeping, chronograph and more.

This watch also features a worldtimer bezel, which is excellent for travel, as it lets users keep track of time in 24 cities (and their respective time zones). And if that’s not enough, it also comes with automatic Atomic Timekeeping Tech that syncs via radio waves to whatever time zone you’re in.

It also has blue-lumed hands and hour indices (a reference to another Star Wars icon, the lightsaber), an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, 10 BAR water resistance and a power reserve indicator.
