Citizen’s Promaster lineup dates back to the 1980s, but the collection remains among the brand’s most popular offerings. And there are myriad reasons this is the case, not least of all because these sporty watches masterfully blend capability and affordability.

Last month, the Japanese brand introduced a new ocean-inspired, limited-edition version of its Promaster Dive. However, its bold styling was a bit … divisive.

Now, with the Citizen Promaster Dive BN0167-09W, it has taken a much more classic, toned-down, less gaudy approach to that same watch, allowing its most unique feature to shine even brighter.

New wave

The biggest stylistic difference between this Promaster Dive and the one that came before it is the case. While they both measure the same 44 millimeters in diameter, the former edition had a rose gold finish, while this one is much more classic stainless steel.

That might seem like a minor change to some, but for this watch, it makes it far more wearable and a good deal less gaudy. And it’s not just the case; the outline on the hands, indices and even the date window have all been swapped for a classic silver look.

The eye-catching dial also has a sneaky bonus: it’s a solar panel that charges the Eco-Drive movement inside.

That has a tertiary effect as well, benefiting the other eye-catching part of this watch: its dial. Like the previous edition, this watch has a dial crafted with structural ink technology that makes it look as dazzling as rolling ocean waves. And without the distracting rose gold surrounding it, it’s even more eye-catching.

Yet, it also matches the watch better overall. Furthermore, the color of the rotating dive timer bezel is reflected in some of the dial’s hues, creating a much more cohesive whole. Of course, that stylistic alteration is also benefited by the fact that this is a highly capable and convenient sporty timepiece.

Sport summer stunner

Beyond being an eye-catching conversation starter, that dial serves another purpose: it’s a solar panel. By wearing this watch outside (or under any light source), it will keep the beloved, tried-and-true Eco-Drive movement inside the case juiced up and ticking reliably and accurately.

As mentioned, the watch also has a rotating dive timer bezel, which pairs with its 200 meters of water resistance to make this a “true” dive watch. It also has an offset crown, a convenient, comfortable feature that’s a signature of the Promaster Dive lineup, and a sporty polyurethane strap.

Furthermore, the dial indices, hands and bezel pip are all lumed for easier low-light viewing, should you find yourself out on a night dive or just out on the town.

Best of all, this whole package is pretty impressively affordable. You can score this watch for under $500 brand-new, with no catches or downsides.
