Citizen’s Promaster Dive might be the brand’s most beloved watch series ever. And that’s saying a lot, as the brand has an extremely deep catalog, including stunning dress watches, GMT travel timepieces, digital oddities and so much more.

Well, the long-running line just got a new edition in the limited-edition Citizen Promaster Drive EO2023-00W. While the styling is sure to be divisive, there’s no denying that this is a bold new entry. And it actually has some interesting things happening with the dial application, alongside its time-tested mechanisms.

Seafaring Citizen

Clearly, there’s a lot going on stylistically with this watch, but we’ll get to that later. In the meantime, it’s important to note that this timepiece still fits in right alongside other Promaster Dive Eco-Drive watches.

Perhaps most obviously, that means this watch is powered by the brand’s proprietary Eco-Drive tech, which uses solar power (or light from any source) to juice up its reliable, accurate quartz movement. That means no batteries, no winding, no plugging it in and so on.

The dial’s unique coloring is the result of pigment-free structural ink that dynamically reflects light and offers robust functionality.

It’s also a true diver, rated for depths of up to 200 meters. And it comes with a robust 36.5 millimeter case, complete with a classic dive timer rotating bezel and, another hallmark of the Promaster Dive lineup, an offset, shielded crown.

It also has lumed hands and minimalist dial markers, and it boasts a date window at the 4 o’clock position. It also comes with a robust stainless steel case. Yet, for all its elements that fit in with its siblings, it has just as many that make it stand out.

On the surface

While the case is made from tough and durable stainless steel, as is typical with Promaster Dive watches, it sports a somewhat unusual rose gold hue. Furthermore, the dive timer bezel is offset by a silver background with rose gold markers and numerals.

And while that’s definitely a unique vibe, the dial is even wilder. Inspired by the colors of the ocean, the shifting blue-turquoise pattern is managed with pigment-free structural ink that dynamically reflects light while still enabling the watch’s robust, solar performance.

The strap, done in a gray that matches the silver of the dive timer bezel, is also somewhat unique. While it looks and performs like rubber or silicone, it’s actually made from a plant-based material called Benebiol, and comes with a stainless steel buckle that matches the rose gold hue of the case.

It’s worth noting that this is a limited-edition release, and only 3,400 examples were made. And that’s not exclusive to a single market; it’s worldwide. More will not be manufactured once these ones are all spoken for. So, if you’re interested in this summery, eye-catching, unique watch, you’ll want to get one while you can.
