By now, I think most people who are even a little bit interested in watches are aware that Seiko has a luxury sister brand called Grand Seiko. But what a lot of those same people may not know is that Seiko has another luxury sibling that, in some respects, is considered even more high-end than Grand Seiko.

That sleeper brand is Credor, which remains largely unknown globally due to its overwhelming focus on its home Japanese market. But Credor makes some absolutely masterful watches using many of the same techniques and much of the same technology as Grand Seiko.

Its latest is a striking everyday watch that combines a tranquil ceramic dial with a gorgeously decorated hand-wound Spring Drive movement.

Keep calm and Credor on

Part of Credor’s Kuon collection, the new reference GCLX995 was crafted around the theme of “calmness.” Driving home this point in gentle fashion is the dial, which is crafted from colored ceramic, a first for Credor and something we’ve previously seen from other luxury brands like Omega and, as of last year, Rolex.

Because the ceramic will never fade or corrode, it’s a logical choice for the Kuon collection, as “kuon” is Japanese for “eternity.” The dial’s deep blue hue is inspired by the Japanese concept of “nagi,” which means a calm sea. The Credor logo and 12:00, along with the stick and Arabic indices, are all laser-engraved into the ceramic and then filled with paint.

Amping up the watch’s “calm seas” vibe is a silent, smoothly gliding seconds hand courtesy of a Spring Drive movement. The hybrid quartz-mechanical engine inside is the Caliber 7R31, and it’s exclusive to Credor.

The movement is manually wound and features an unusual “dual-spring mainbarrel” with two mainsprings stacked parallel in the same barrel. This allows for a power reserve of 72 hours while maintaining a decidedly slim profile.

The movement is visible through a sapphire caseback and is more beautifully decorated than any Spring Drive caliber I’ve seen from Grand Seiko. It features a unique rippled wave pattern emanating from the barrel, designed to resemble flowing water. Heat-blued screws, deep-set jewels and several circular cutouts add more visual splendor, and there’s a discreet power-reserve indicator for tracking your three days of juice. The movement’s accuracy is better than any purely mechanical watch at +/-15 seconds per month.

The 39mm stainless steel case also takes aquatic inspiration in its design, with flowing lines and a mixed brushed and polished finish. The seven-row bracelet mostly continues the hairline brushing found on the top of the lugs, save for the third links in on each side, which are polished.

Availability and pricing

Credor may fly under the radar, but the brand makes some of the most exquisite watches coming out of Japan. The ref. GCLX995 is scheduled to hit the Japanese market in exactly one month on April 24 and is priced at ¥1,595,000 (~$10,038).
