Farer’s New Affordable Dress Watch Is too Sleek Not to Wear Every Day

Some watches are just meant to be compact, and this is one of them.

Ever since Farer introduced its cushion case collection in 2022, the elegant mid-century design has been begging for a more compact, era-faithful iteration.

Well, the day has finally come, and the new 35mm Cushion Case is as suave as I could have imagined.

Farer has a taste for cushion cases. Beyond the above-mentioned collection, the brand’s Moonphase, Aqua Compressor and Integra collections all feature puffy, rounded silhouettes.

The new 35mm Cushion Case is by far the most elegant execution of the form yet. The look is nearly identical to the British watchmaker’s original 38.5mm Cushion Case, which is also utilized in the Moonphase collection, but scaled down here to match mid-century preferences.

The understated 35mm case features the same angled lugs, set below a chamfered edge that frames the top of the case, and finished with a brilliant mirror polish. It is accented with the same coin-edge crown, inset with a brass logo coin, as its larger predecessor.

Under the bridge

That substantial crown winds a Sellita Caliber SW210-b hand-wound movement, a smaller version of the movement used in the standard Cushion Case collection. It is customized with the same decorative bridge, perlage and blued screws, and provides the same 45-hour power reserve.

All we’ve got is time

Straying from convention, Farer opted to debut the 35mm Cushion Case with just two dial options. They differ only in the color and texture of the dial and the matching colored tip of the arrow seconds hand.

Both debut options feature polished steel beveled alpha hour and minute hands, accompanied by an arrow seconds hand that extends nearly to the dial’s edge. They point to applied steel hour markers with Arabic numerals for 3, 6, 9 and 12, filled out with sloped metallic stick indices.

A dash minutes track runs along the dial’s outer rim, and it is framed by a color-matched rehaut with a 60-minute track marked at five-minute intervals.

Raspberries and teal

Farer is adept at playing with color and texture, adding intrigue and depth to otherwise straightforward designs. The 35mm Cushion Case does so in a subtle but effective way.

The teal dial has a radial texture that Farer likens to bark, but I think more closely resembles an eye. It creates a motion effect that draws the viewer’s attention to the dial’s center.

The raspberry pink dial has a rough texture like stucco or concrete, contrasting the polished surfaces and faceted lines of the hands and indices.

Both colors feature a fumé effect that fades almost to black at the dial’s edge, and the rehaut track and seconds hand tip match the dial color.

Availability and pricing

Farer is known to get creative and playful with its designs, but the 35mm Cushion Case demonstrates an appropriate measure of restraint. It is the most elegant and modest dress watch I’ve seen from the brand, but the design is so comfortable and versatile that it’s hard not to wear every day.

The Farer 35mm Cushion Case is available now from Farer for $1,165. Each dial color is offered with the same selection of a quick-release pin buckle strap in gray-blue suede, taupe suede, navy blue pebble grain leather or gray pebble grain leather.
