When Time and Tide founder Andrew McUtchen got the opportunity to create an exclusive watch with Frederique Constant, he knew it had to be in the sporty Highlife collection, it had to be a moonphase and it had to be unlike any other watch the esteemed Swiss brand had created before.

The resulting Frederique Constant x Time and Tide Highlife Moonphase Manufacture Onyx Moon applies vintage dress watch elements to the integrated steel sports watch, and it’s an absolute stunner.

Apart from the semi-cushion case, the Onyx Moon, for short, is a complete departure from the Highlife collection’s design language. It has squared-off dauphine hands with an etched line bisecting the hour hand, much like the Grand Seiko Evolution 9 collection.

The far more obvious outlier is the onyx dial, which is the first stone variety to grace a Highlife reference. Moreover, the lack of any indices or tracks presents a stark contrast to the collection’s typically busy dials.

Outside of the 31-day date track encircling the moonphase window at 6:00, the only marking on the entire dial is a brand logo printed in white and red at 12:00.

Complemented by a 39mm brushed steel case with a polished, rounded bezel, the sleek dial creates a watch that is both elegant and infinitely wearable.

Living the highlife

Frederique Constant’s Highlife collection consists of integrated steel sports watches with highly legible dials and bold colors. Almost every reference shares the same case shape and H-link integrated steel bracelet.

While the Onyx Moon is built upon the Highlife case, it is the first watch in the collection to be fitted with an integrated jubilee-style five-link steel bracelet. It has a butterfly clasp signed with the watchmaker’s heraldic logo.

Adding to the allure of the release, the Onyx Moon comes with two additional straps fitted to the unique lugs. There is a black calfskin strap embossed with an alligator texture, as well as a black version of the textured rubber strap found throughout the Highlife collection.

Another momentous milestone for the Onyx Moon is that it is the first reference in the Highlife collection to run on Frederique Constant’s manufacture caliber FC-716 automatic moonphase movement. It beats at 4Hz, has a 72-hour power reserve and is decorated with Geneva stripes, displayed through the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback.

To the moon

The glaring appeal of the Onxy Moon is its minimalist dial, but in a clever twist, the collaborators added hyper-realistic detail to the moonphase dial. It may require a loupe to fully appreciate, but the cratered lunar surface is depicted in multiple shades of gray, flanked by white stars on a matte black wheel.

This is another outlier for Frederique Constant, which offers an impressive assortment of moonphase watches, but almost exclusively with uniform brushed lunar decals.

The traditional crescent moonphase window sits within a familiar Frederique Constant date track, printed in light gray numerals except for a red 31, which is indicated by a simple bead-blasted steel pointer.
