Ming has one of the most distinct and unique design languages in the entire watch industry, but they can be difficult to obtain. Most of the independent brand’s watches have price tags well into five figures and severely limited production runs.

That’s what makes the brand’s 37 Series so great.

Starting with the 37.02 Minimalist, this series of watches not only represents the lowest price points in Ming’s current catalog, but they also introduced the brand’s first permanent collection, meaning most models in the line will continue to be restocked after selling out, at least on an annual basis if not more often.

Ming’s latest in the line “completes the essential Ming starter set” alongside the Minimalist and black DLC-coated Monolith, according to the brand, adding a bit more sparkle (literally) to the two-hand design language established by those two models.

Starstruck

The new Ming 37.08 Twilight is essentially a hybrid of two prior Ming 37-Series watches. First, and most obvious, is the discontinued 37.08 Starlight, for which the Twilight serves as a replacement. The new watch recycles a few key components from that model.

Most obviously, the Twilight marks the return of Ming’s sparkling aventurine dial. Resembling a starry night sky, the midnight-blue aventurine glass contains flecks of metal, giving it its shimmering appearance. The Twilight also keeps the Starlight’s Super-LumiNova X1-coated handset, along with its luminous Hyceram indices that are laser-cut into the underside of the sapphire crystal.

The movement inside is also borrowed from the Starlight. It’s Sellita’s custom Calibre SW210.M1 made specially for Ming. This version of the hand-cranker has been skeletonized with rhodium-plated bridges and a matte, anthracite mainplate to better match Ming’s high-end, futuristic aesthetic.

The case is effectively the same one you’ll find on Ming’s 37.02 Monolith, which is the black DLC-coated version of the Minimalist’s 38mm x 11mm stainless steel case. Here, the black case makes for a more fitting environment for the aventurine dial, amping up the outer space vibes of the watch. And while the aventurine dial certainly makes the watch dressier, the Twilight is just as sporty as other 37-series models, retaining the 100m water resistance of the Monolith and Minimalist.

Rather than borrowing the Starlight’s steel bracelet or the FKM rubber strap from the Monolith, the Twilight has gone to Ming’s longtime collaborator, French strap specialist Jean Rousseau Paris, for a custom anthracite-colored stitched goat leather strap.

The strap is fitted with Ming’s signature tuck buckle that lets you tuck in the tail of the strap against your wrist, and the buckle has been given a DLC coating to match the case.

Availability and pricing

The Twilight looks like another winner from Ming. It’s wearable, beautiful, versatile and incorporates many of the brand’s hallmarks, including floating luminous indices, flying blade lugs and, of course, the Tron-like design language. My only wish is that the watch incorporated the brand’s proprietary Polar White lume, as that stuff is just too cool and really should be used on every Ming moving forward.

Ming has not yet specified whether the Twilight will become part of its permanent collection like the Minimalist or whether it will have a limited run like the Starlight. On Instagram, the brand says it plans to keep the model around “for a little bit” and will decide on whether or not to do additional runs based on collector feedback.

Pricing for the 37.08 Twilight comes in at CHF 4,000, which currently converts to $5,000 almost exactly (yikes, U.S. dollar). That’s CHF 500 more than the Monolith on account of the aventurine dial and pricier strap, and CHF 500 less than the Starlight was, given the lack of bracelet. In other words, the pricing is right where I’d expect it to be.
