Panerai is now known as a luxury watch brand, but for much of its history, the Florentine brand supplied a range of technical equipment to the Royal Italian Navy. The R&D department that turned out one of the world’s first illuminated rifle scopes and early wrist-worn diving instruments is still going strong.

One of Panerai’s most impressive developments is Carbotch, a proprietary carbon fiber and polymer compound that is 64 percent lighter than titanium and 80 percent lighter than steel. It comprises the case, bezel and locking crown bridge of the new Luminor Marina PAM01707.

Despite using an advanced new case material, this Luminor Marina retains the mid-century tool-ish charm of its steel predecessors. It has the same 44mm cushion case, large curved crown bridge and curved fixed bezel.

Carbotech is formed by fusing thin sheets of carbon fiber together with a polymer called Polyether Ether Ketone under extremely high pressure. The layered formation creates a wood-like grain that resembles brushed metal, resulting in a unique finish on each watch.

Along with its exceptional lightweight, the material is extremely resistant to corrosion, including notoriously harsh saltwater.

At first glance, I assumed this Luminor had a black DLC coating, but it turns out that only the screw-on titanium caseback is finished that way. Which means that the black color will not degrade in any way as the watch ages.

An unorthodox icon

The grainy black Carbotech case perfectly complements the iconic Luminor Marina time-only dial. This reference features the essential iteration with a matte black top layer of the sandwich dial over an “Old Radium” bottom layer exposed through a 3-6-9-12 hour track and cardinal points on the small seconds dial.

A Panerai wordmark is printed in white above 6:00, and “Luminor Marina” is likewise printed below 12:00. Eight small white printed dashes fill out the seconds track.

The pencil hour and minute hand frames, as well as the small seconds hand, are coated in matte black and filled with matching “Old Radium” Super-LumiNova.

The Luminor Marina PAM01707 is powered by the Panerai Caliber P.9010, manufactured in Richmont’s ValFleurier facilities. It beats at 4Hz and provides a three-day power reserve courtesy of two series-connected barrels.

Black ops

Panerai provides two straps with the Luminor Marina PAM1707 that maximize its disparate vintage form and modern function. It comes on a rugged brown leather strap with contrasting box stitching and a black DLC-coated titanium pin buckle, emphasizing the iconic mid-century dial and cushion case.

It also comes with a black rubber pin buckle strap that creates a stealthy look and supports the modern technical capabilities of this 300m, tough-as-nails dive watch.

As much as I appreciate the vintage look of a black Luminor Marina on a brown leather strap. I’ll take the uniform black of the rubber strap because it’s uncharacteristically modern for Panerai.

Plus, all-black watches always look cool.

Availability and pricing

The most startling stat of this gorgeous dive watch is that it only weighs approximately 100 grams, according to Panerai, which is remarkable for a 44mm automatic watch with 300m water resistance and a three-day power reserve.

The Panerai Luminor Marina PAM01707 is available now from Panerai for $15,600.
