Seiko’s 145th anniversary collection wouldn’t be complete without a Speedtimer.

Seiko’s Speedtimer has a heritage that rivals that of hyped luxury chronographs like the Daytona, Carrera and Speedmaster, despite being significantly more affordable.

It debuted alongside Switzerland’s original automatic chronographs, saw duty in outer space and has become interwoven with motorsports timing. So it was an obvious selection for Seiko’s 145th anniversary collection honoring  Kintaro Hattori, who founded the brand in 1881.

Seiko’s 145th anniversary Prosepex Speedtimer SRQ059 is built on the current generation of Seiko’s flagship automatic chronograph. Even though it looks significantly different than the original 1969 mono-compax design, a 2023 overhaul embraced the popular auto racing chronograph design language of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

However, a subtle texture, situated on a plane between the applied hour markers and sunken subdials, references a far older chapter in the esteemed Japanese watchmaker’s history. The woven spiral guilloché-like pattern emanating from the dial’s center is based on engravings from some of the earliest pocket watches sold by Hattori.

The pearly off-white nineteenth-century geometric texture blends surprisingly well with the 1960s-inspired dial. It adds a level of sophistication to the otherwise sporty design, which is further enhanced by the gold-toned finish on the hands, hour markers and dial logo.

Along with nods to Hattori’s designs, gold detailing is a unifying feature found on all four watches in Seiko’s new 145th anniversary collection. But those two elements have the strongest juxtaposition on Seiko’s heralded tool watch.

A fancy racer

The Prospex Speedtimer SRQxx series offers some of the best bang-for-your-buck watches in Seiko’s expansive catalog. It boasts looks and performance that rival far more expensive luxury competitors, thanks primarily to Seiko’s Caliber 8R48 movement.

Seiko

It’s the brand’s most impressive automatic chronograph movement outside of Grand Seiko. A classic column wheel and vertical clutch arrangement is enhanced by a MEMS escapement with a 4Hz beat rate and a 45-hour power reserve.

The movement features a 30-minute counter at 9:00 and a 12-hour counter at 6:00, with black-tipped hands corresponding to the central seconds hand and differentiating the small seconds at 3:00 — an often-overlooked attention to detail that I appreciate in a chronograph.

The SRQ059 has a 42mm super-hard-coated stainless steel case that blends brushed and polished surfaces to accentuate its gently curving lines. It’s topped with a polished steel bezel that holds a dual-curved sapphire crystal with an inner AR coating.

With the smooth, fixed steel bezel, a tachymeter scale is printed on the rehaut. The hour hand, minute hand and hour markers are filled with Seiko’s LumiBrite.

Completing the Golden Age of Racing Watches look is a steel bracelet pulled from Seiko’s archive that has been a regular fixture of the automatic Speedtimer collection since 2023. It is comprised of solid, narrow steel links, each secured with four tiny connecting links.

Availability and price

This fancied-up Speedtimer is a fitting member of Seiko’s birthday celebration because it represents a pivotal era from the brand’s history that is still adored by fans today, enhanced with a touch from the brand’s founder.

Seiko’s 145th anniversary Prosepex Speedtimer SRQ059 will be available from Seiko in February 2026 for $2,500, which is notably the same price as standard SRQxx Speedtimer references.

All four watches in the anniversary release are limited editions, but for some reason, this one is the rarest, with only 700 pieces produced.
