Timex’s Beloved Affordable Midcentury Watch Gets a Captivating ’90s Reissue

Thirty years have passed since NBA G.O.A.T. Michael Jordan was transported into the Warner Bros cartoon universe to team up with Bugs Bunny and the gang against talent-stealing aliens in Space Jam.

While it was far from a critical hit, this flick was a major part of the childhoods of millions of ’90s kids, yours truly included.

That’s probably exactly who Timex had in mind when producing the Space Jam x Q Timex 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Watch. Yet, this cheeky, vintage-inspired timepiece actually has some much cooler features than you might expect at first glance.

What’s up, Doc?

At its core, this is still very much a classic Q Timex watch. That means it largely retains its signature form factor and functionality.

Like its siblings, this watch has a 38-millimeter stainless-steel case and a matching integrated bracelet. It also has an elapsed time bezel, in this case done up in blue and gray.

Within that case, it comes with the brand’s reliable quartz analog movement, which keeps it ticking reliably, dutifully and affordably (although you will need to swap the battery every couple of years).

In fact, even considering that this is a special-edition watch with only 1,000 units made, it’s still remarkably affordable, coming in at just $269 apiece.

But therein lies the beauty of Q Timex. Yet, this particular edition definitely stands out for a bevy of other reasons.

A slam dunk

Obviously, this is a character watch, featuring Bugs Bunny in his signature uniform tossing a basketball through a hoop on the other side of the dial. It also has the Space Jam 30th Anniversary logo between them.

But this isn’t a normal character watch. The design is integrated into the functionality.

For instance, the basketball functions as the watch’s second hand, making a full rotation every minute. Furthermore, it features a clever design element: the backboard is on the dial, while the hoop is painted on the inside of the acrylic crystal, giving the illusion of the ball traveling through the net with each rotation.

And then there’s the lume. Along with the hour markers and hands, all the character art, the logo, the backboard outlines and even the basketball are all fully lumed.

As I said, for a cheeky special edition character watch, a lot more thought and design prowess went into it than I presume anyone would have expected. And that could make this a serious collector’s piece.
