Timex has a long relationship with the Peanuts gang, dating back to the 1960s when Snoopy and company were making their biggest impact on pop culture through projects like their now-iconic holiday TV specials and forming a relationship with NASA.

Today, Timex still produces a wider variety of Snoopy watches than any other brand, with everything from quartz chronographs to divers to digital watches.

But as far as I’m concerned, the best Snoopy watches coming out of Timex are those that resurrect a cool and quirky feature from vintage watches, like the new Peanuts x Timex Marlin Automatic Space.

Float on

In recent years, Timex has brought back the mid-century “mystery dial” in the form of several Snoopy watches. Mystery dials replace one or more of their hands with a marking on a transperent disc, creating an illusion that looks as if the hands are floating over the dial.

Timex has used mystery dials with floating second hands in several Peanuts-themed Marlin Automatics, which give the impression that the seconds hand is floating around the dial thanks to the automatic movement’s clean sweep. We’ve seen this effect with Snoopy smacking a tennis ball, kicking a soccer ball and chasing his pal Woodstock.

But the newest mystery dial from Timex is a bit more ambitious, if also a bit less practical. Rather than a single seconds hand, the Peanuts x Timex Marlin Automatic Space features a trio of Peanuts characters as astronauts printed on a transparent disc.

A transparent disc in place of the sweep seconds hand allows Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty and Franklin to “float” around the dial.

Against a static space ship dial featuring Lucy and Snoopy as astronauts, Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty and Franklin all float around them in zero gravity, making their way around the dial. All five characters are dressed in modern orange astronaut uniforms, reminiscent of those worn by the Artemis II crew.

Powering the floating astronauts is a Japan-made Miyota Calibre 8215 automatic movement, which has 21 jewels, beats at 4Hz, has a power reserve of 40 hours and has a date complication at 3:00. It’s visible behind a display caseback decorated with a printing of the Peanuts gang.

The mostly polished 40mm stainless steel case is the same one you’ll find on other Marlin Automatics and is heavily mid-century inspired, as is the sunbrushed silver dial that serves as the background for our space station. The thin pencil hands, applied stick indices and highly domed acrylic crystal add to the retro vibes.

The watch is paired with a sustainably produced black leather strap affixed with quick-release spring bars and secured with a Timex-signed pin buckle in stainless steel.

Availability and pricing

I generally like Timex’s Snoopy watches, and this may be the coolest one I’ve seen yet. I’m always a sucker for a mystery dial’s floating effect, and the application here of making three Peanuts characters float around the dial is just so clever and fun. Plus, it’s dropping at a time when excitement around space travel is the highest it’s been in decades, so it feels particularly culturally relevant.

The Timex x Peanuts Marlin Automatic Space is currently available for preorder on Timex’s website, where it is priced at $339. Given the popularity of Timex’s previous Snoopy mystery dials, and the lasting hype around Artemis II, I expect this to sell out quickly.
