Unimatic’s New $740 UT1-PD Merges Its Toolwatch and ProDiver Lines for the First Time

Over the past couple of years, Unimatic has amassed more hype than any other young, independent watch brand through its staggering amount of collaborations.

However, the brand remains anchored in its pragmatic, high-performance tool watches with minimalist, mid-century aesthetics. Two primary branches of that core catalog, the Toolwatch and ProDiver collections, come together for the first time in the new Modello Uno UT1-PD.

The UT1-PD is a limited edition Unimatic hybrid that combines the Toolwatch internal architecture with the ProDiver case and bezel. It features a brushed 40mm stainless steel case that overlaps both collections.

Visually, the dial blends the classic printed triangle-dot-dash hour markers of the ProDiver line with the Toolwatch “ghost ladder” handset and dash minutes track.

The 41.5mm coin-edge overhanging bezel looks very similar to that of the Toolwatch. However, the 60-minute track is reversed, counting up rather than down to conform to diving standards. It is also accented with an orange triangle on the pip.

Under pressure

The most notable feature pulled from Unimatic’s Toolwatch is the brand’s 360 Protection System. It is a plastic cage that holds the movement and a rig that holds the dial, both designed to absorb impact to prevent damage.

The UT1-PD carries the same MIL-STD-810H designation as the Toolwatch collection, indicating that it meets the US Military’s standards for shock, corrosion, water pressure and magnetic resistance, as well as clarity and functionality. The designation is noted on the dial in orange print.

Even though this watch falls under the UT designation, Unimatic’s ProDiver SCUBA helmet etching decorates the screw-on caseback. Each watch’s number from the 250-piece limited-edition collection is etched on the helmet mask.

A deep dive

After wearing the UT1-PD for a week, I concluded that it is a ProDiver upgraded with Toolwatch tech. Which is to say that it is a dive watch, first and foremost. Almost all Unimatic watches offer 300m water resistance, but this one also features a fundamental diver dial and bezel.

It is also extremely legible in the dark, thanks to the green-emitting Super-LumiNova C1 on the hands, hour markers and pip.

One other feature carried over from the Toolwatch collection is the movement. It runs on a Seiko Caliber VH31A quartz with a mechanical-like sweeping seconds hand.

I’ve grown fond of this movement because it avoids the lurching tick that turns me and many others off from quartz movements, while providing the low maintenance, dependable accuracy and strong shock-resistance of a battery-powered watch.

Availability and price

The Modello Uno UT1-PD is available now from Unimatic for $750, which is much cheaper than any previous ProDiver watch. It comes on the brand’s new lightweight TPU quick-release strap with a brushed stainless steel pin buckle.
