Anime watch collaborations aren’t rare, but they typically don’t fall into the luxury tier. The notable exception is an ongoing series where Zenith brings to life its own watches as they appeared on the seminal Lupin the 3rd.

Zenith debuted the first Lupin the 3rd Chronomaster Revival in 2019 as part of the A384 50th anniversary celebration. Despite the two-faced “Final Edition” released in 2022, a surprise fourth installment has been revealed, and if you’re a vintage chronograph fan, it is the best one yet.

Zenith’s Chronomaster Revival Daisuke Jigen Edition is named after the sidekick to Lupin the 3rd’s titular gentleman thief protagonist. When the popular Manga was adapted to an anime series in 1971, Daisuke Jigen wore a watch clearly inspired by the Zenith A384, a cutting-edge mechanical chronograph at the time.

The first watch in Zenith’s Lupin the 3rd series mirrored the black dial with gray sub-dials, as it first appeared in the anime. The second watch in the series featured a classic panda dial, as seen on Daisuke Jigen’s wrist in later episodes.

The Chronomaster Revival Daisuke Jigen Edition, which skips the Lupin the 3rd naming convention of previous editions and gives credit where it is due, is more of a direct sequel to the second watch in the series.

It is a classic panda dial signed only with Zenith’s name and star emblem, as it appeared in the show. This time, the crisp white of the dial is replaced with a beige faux patina, and the steel case and bracelet are now microblasted titanium.

Part Two, the sequel

You don’t have to be a fan of Lupin the 3rd, or even be aware of the anime series, to appreciate the Chronomaster Revival Daisuke Jigen Edition. In fact, it plays more to mid-century chronograph fans than Manga enthusiasts.

The first thing that jumps out is the dial color, which emulates what a 1971 Zenith A384 panda dial may look like today. It isn’t just a uniform beige; it has an aged tone and texture to mimic patina.

Following through on the theme, the ruthenium-plated hands and applied baton hour markers are also filled with green-glowing beige Super-LumiNova.

The dial is notably lacking the printed “Chronograph Automatic” and script El Primero logo that appear underneath the brand logo on every other Chronomaster Revival reference.

Zenith

All four watches in Zenith’s Lupin the 3rd series are Chronomaster Revivals, utilizing the same 37mm angular cushion case with pump-style pushers. However, the newest addition is the first to use microblasted titanium for the case and bracelet.

Familiar from the Chronomaster Revival Shadow and Safari models, it features a matte charcoal finish — which Zenith calls black, but is clearly not. It comes on Zenith’s signature ladder bracelet, designed by Gay Frères in 1969 exclusively for the brand.

One feature that has carried through the entire Lupin the 3rd series is a line drawing of Daisuke Jigen on the sapphire crystal caseback, placed over top of Zenith’s in-house El Primero 400 automatic chronograph movement.

This particular El Primero caliber is a direct evolution of the Swiss watchmaker’s original automatic chronograph movement that powered the A384, one of the first movements of its kind ever developed. The modern iteration has a high-beat 5Hz rate and a 50-hour power reserve.

Availability and price

Just as with the previous three releases, the Zenith Chronomaster Revival Daisuke Jigen Edition is a limited production. This time, 200 units are available worldwide, which is four times as many as the initial release, but 50 fewer than the previous one.

The watch will be available for purchase initially in-person only at Zenith’s pop-up at Isetan in Shinjuku, Japan, on November 19. It will then become available online worldwide on November 26 for $10,400.
