There’s probably not another sneaker brand more quintessentially Southern California than Vans. After all, the legendary surf and skate outfit has operated out of Anaheim since the 1960s.

Yet, even for this legendary brand, one of its upcoming drops, the Vans x Travis Barker Old Skool, feels perhaps more appropriately SoCal (and punk rock) than ever.

Stay together for the kicks

Born in Fontana, in Southern California’s Inland Empire, Travis Barker is a true Californian. He’s also one of the most well-known and influential drummers of all time, known to most people from his time behind the kit in the pop-punk band Blink-182.

He has also performed with the Aquabats, +44, Transplants, Boxcar Racer and has been featured alongside countless other musicians. Put in plain terms, he’s a musical legend. Put those two factors together and it makes perfect sense that he’d work with Vans, although it’s perhaps surprising that it has taken so long.

Stylistic alterations include “Dues Paid” on the toes in Old English font, custom boombox graphics on the tongues, barbed wire foxing graphics around the outsole and “Travis Barker” on the heels.

It also makes sense that Barker would use the Old Skool, arguably Vans’ most iconic silhouette, for this collaboration, both for its connection to his upbringing and for its ties to skate and punk music culture (remember, Blink-182 was a fixture of the Vans Warped Tour).

And while the shoe remains largely true to the elements that have made it such a legendary sneaker, there are also some noteworthy alterations personally designed by Barker himself for this release.

Punked-up kicks

The core Old Skool sneaker remains largely intact, which makes sense, but it is also a boon for lovers of the iconic style. Most of the tweaks are stylistic flair and don’t compromise the integrity of the sneaker itself.

That means the upper is still soft suede with a signature leather side stripe, and the outsole is vulcanized rubber with a waffle tread. Performance-wise, you can expect it to hold up great, wear comfortably and even acquire some unique wear and tear exclusive to your experience.

Here’s where the stylistic elements come into play, starting from the front. The sneakers’ toes have the phrase “Dues Paid,” Barker’s personal mantra, in Old English font on the toes. His name is also emblazoned on the heel in mixed font (similar in style to old-school punk rock show flyers).

Then, around the outsole, instead of traditional foxing, there are barbed wire graphics. And the whole thing is finished off with a custom boombox graphic on the tongues.

As the images also suggest, there’s another version with inverted colors (white with black details) coming out sometime in the future.

The collaboration will also see a second release, one with inverted colors, that will drop sometime after the first.

The Vans x Travis Barker Old Skool sneakers (in black) don’t drop until October 23, but you can sign up for notifications now, as this is a limited release likely to sell out very quickly.

The brand also promises a second drop (likely the white version) sometime before the end of 2026.
