Vans Slip-On was originally released all the way back in 1979. And while it represents one of the brand’s most easy-wearing styles, it was still intended for skateboarding, and it helped the brand revolutionize the footwear industry.

Now, nearly 50 years later, this silhouette is still an essential staple of the brand’s catalog and is among the most iconic sneakers ever made. But the latest edition, the Vans OTW Slip On 98 Knot Vibram, is among the most unique the brand has ever made.

And it has a sneaky performance-focused upgrade to boot…

Slip into something knotty

We have to talk about the elephant in the room: this Slip-On’s knot. Although placed where laces might go, I assure you that these are still slip-on sneakers. That maritime-looking knot is just for looks.

And while it’s certain to be divisive, it’s one of the most original elements that has ever been put on this sneaker. That said, it’s not the only thing that’s interesting about the shoe’s upper.

Although non-functional, the shoe’s knot adds an eye-catching stylistic element not found on other Slip-Ons.

You’ll notice that this OTW Slip-On comes in two colorways: black-and -white and all-over blue. But they’re not just different in appearance. The black version features a furry suede upper, which is both more textured than traditional versions and soft to the touch.

However, the all-over blue version is crafted instead from heavyweight canvas, which is technically more in line with this shoe’s more traditional materials, even if it does look wildly different.

That said, the most exciting part of this reimagining isn’t discernible from above.

Style and substance

Flip the sneaker over, and you’ll see what might be a familiar yellow logo at about the midfoot of the outsole. That’s right, these slip-on sneakers come with a Vibram outsole. But not just any Vibram outsole; it’s Vans’ custom Vibram vulc outsole with tank tread.

That means they’re grippier, more slip-resistant and more durable than the brand’s traditional vulcanized rubber outsole sneakers. And that gives them a major performance edge.

While the unconventional upper is eye-catching, the Vibram outsole is arguably more exciting.

While you might not want to wear them for skating, you certainly could, and they’ll definitely keep you glued to your board when you need it. They can also handle everything from urban exploration to light outdoor trails … should you find yourself in an adventuresome mood.

Across both versions, the sneaker also gets a Sola Foam ADC (All-Day Comfort) insole, padded collar, elastic side panels and much more.
