Honda’s Revived Cult Classic Rolls Up for 2027 with a Refined JDM Wrinkle

The Prelude dons a new look that’s equal parts bold and classy.

Honda’s decision to revive the iconic Prelude hasn’t been without controversy. As exciting as it is that the nameplate is back, its hybrid drivetrain is leaving some enthusiasts a little wanting.

All the same, it’s hard to take fault with the coupe’s striking sheet metal. From its sharp nose to its double-bubble roof, it brings a more elegant, more sculpted form than its Civic stablemate.

For 2027, Honda is leaning into the refinement even more with a new special-edition version. While it’s a vehicle that’s set to land in Japan for now, it could very well be a sign of things to come.

An even prettier Prelude

I’m talking about the new Prelude Limited Edition that Honda has announced this week for the Japanese market. It’s a treatment that arrives on the heels of (and validates) prior rumors.

In any case, the look is nothing if not perfect for the Prelude. Around the outside, Honda has dressed the Limited Edition in ‘Premium Crystal Garnet Metallic,’ a hue not typically offered on the option sheet.

Together with the two-tone machined aluminum wheels, Brembo brake calipers and smattering of bright red accents, it makes for a sharp combo. But it gets better once you open the doors.

That’s because, inside, the 2027 Limited Edition brings a trim Honda is calling ‘Bordeaux.’ Skewing more sanguine than garish grand prix, it’s a subtle color that makes for a nice accent against the rest of the black upholstery.

No performance upgrades yet

Apart from a few other minor visual touches (like a red logo on the dash), that’s really the extent of what Honda has cooked up for the Limited Edition.

Accordingly, underneath the new digs, the Prelude is the same as the standard model. It still retains its 2.0-liter four-cylinder and dual electric motors rated for a 200 horsepower output. Moreover, Honda continues to hype up the inclusion of S+Shift with its simulated gear changes.

So. Why, then, doesn’t the treatment bring more power to the table?

Well, as things stand, Honda has stated that it has no “current plans” to introduce a hotter Type S or Type R Prelude variant. For now, it’s keeping the coupe positioned more as a relaxed GT, prioritizing hybrid efficiency over absolute sports car thrills.

Much as that might be to the ire of some enthusiasts, it’s not hurting Honda’s Prelude sales. The automaker previously sold out of its ON Limited Edition at launch, so this new visual treatment comes with an established precedent.

Availability and pricing

As of this writing, the 2027 Honda Prelude Limited Edition is only set to be available in Japan. It’s slated for debut on Thursday, August 20, with an MSRP of 6,306,300 yen (~$39,000).
