Jack Mason has earned a reputation as one of the most respected American watch brands through obsessive attention to detail. That applies to visual design, which consistently puts a personalized twist on classic archetypes, but it also applies to the care it takes in selecting and regulating movements.

That enthusiast-level obsession is on full display with the new Canton Day-Date America 250, which honors America’s big upcoming anniversary with an ode to the most appropriate watch imaginable.

Jack Mason’s Canton is widely appreciated for resembling the Rolex Datejust without going full dupe. For this patriotic semiquincentennial celebration piece, the Texas watchmaker tweaked it to mimic the Rolex Day-Date, commonly referred to as the President.

Rolex introduced the Day-Date in 1956, but it earned its nickname and subsequent popularity after becoming President Lyndon Johnson’s go-to watch in the 1960s (We’ll save Kennedy’s clandestine connection to the watch for another time). It has been linked to the Commander-in-Chief and, by extension, to the United States ever since.

The Canton Day-Date America 250 features a blue dial textured to resemble a flag blowing in the wind. Personally, I think it looks more like the wavy texture found on dive watches like the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M, which is more tasteful.

The hour markers and hands, save for the needle seconds hand, maintain the same silhouette as the standard Canton line, but are faceted, rather than lume-filled. Both are gold-plated and finished with a combination of satin brushing and mirror polishing to emphasize depth and enhance legibility.

Presidential aspirations

What makes this Canton “Presidential” is the day window placed at 12:00. Invented by the Crown and copied countless times, it displays the days of the week in full text and is the distinguishing feature of the Rolex President.

Another detail borrowed from the original Day-Date is a “cyclops” magnifier added to the sapphire crystal above the date complication, which is at 6:00, rather than Rolex’s 3:00.

The Canton Day-Date America 250 has a 41mm brushed stainless steel case, which is closer to the modern Rolex than the original 36mm version worn by LBJ.

Interestingly, Jack Mason chose a 7-link Jubilee-style steel bracelet, rather than the three-link, high-arched, President-style bracelet introduced with the original Day-Date. I’m a big fan of the Jubilee, so I’m not complaining.

Low-key top-grade

Jack Mason is as America-made as a watch brand can get without entering luxury-tier pricing. It assembles all of its watches in Texas and, more importantly, regulates its movements in-house.

The Canton Day-Date America 250 runs on the Sellita Caliber SW240-1, which is a clone of the movement that used to power the Rolex President. Moreover, it is the Top Grade variation, which allows Jack Mason to regulate its accuracy to +/-5 seconds per day, an impressive accuracy for a sub-$2,000 automatic watch.

The movement features a custom gold-tone skeletonized rotor with an engraving of the brand’s Texas Star logo and finished with radial brushing. It is visible through a sapphire exhibition caseback, secured by four screws.

Availability and pricing

Dozens of watches have been released to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, and Jack Mason’s is among the most tasteful and subtle. Apart from the IYKYK historical reference to the Oval Office, its only overt indication outside the caseback is a small red “250” printed above the date window.

Jack Mason’s Canton Day-Date America 250 will be available for pre-order on July 3 for $1,749, with orders shipping out in August 2026. It is a limited edition of 250 pieces.
