Watches are traditionally one of the most popular ways to celebrate an anniversary, and with a really big one coming up for the United States of America, the watch industry is all over it.

As expected, there are plenty of commemorative releases coming from both independent and large American watch brands. But it’s a bit surprising how much the big Swiss players are getting in on the action, including Breitling, the only official luxury watch brand collaborator with America250.

According to its website, “America250 is the national nonpartisan organization charged by Congress to engage every American in celebrating and commemorating the 250th anniversary of our country.”

Any business is free to produce products marking America’s semiquincentennial (that’s the actual word), but only Breitling was chosen as the official luxury watch partner of the government organization.

To handle this prestigious honor, Breitling chose a pair of watches from the Avenger collection, known for its tough-as-nails pilot’s watches. There is an Avenger Automatic 42 and an Avenger B01 Chronograph 42.

Both watches share the same blue dial, a hue seen throughout the Breitling catalog that closely matches the American flag. They also both come on the same matching blue textile strap with a calfskin lining, red side stitching and a steel folding clasp.

Patriotic pilot

The Avenger Automatic 42 is inspired by the type of military pilot’s watches worn by modern American aviators. It was the logical choice to carry this collaboration because it has the broadest appeal in the American market.

Despite being classified as a pilot’s watch, the Avenger Automatic 42 is a perfectly serviceable diver. It has a substantial unidirectional steel bezel with an etched 60-minute track and a lume pearl on the pip.

The dial features applied baton indices, save for a triangle at 12:00, and a framed date window cutting into the 3:00 marker. Its fencepost hour and minute hands are paired with a red-tipped arrow seconds hand.

The hands and hour markers are enhanced with lume and encircled by a white rehaut with a blue 60-second track. A cambered sapphire crystal with AR coating on both sides caps the whole thing.

This patriotic pilot’s watch runs on a Breitling Caliber 17 automatic movement, which beats at 4Hz and offers a modest 38-hour power reserve. It is obscured under a stainless steel caseback featuring an engraving of the Liberty Bell.

Back opps

The other half of the collection is an Avenger B01 Chronograph with the Night Mission black ceramic case and unidirectional bezel. Vertical brushing decorates the case, and a lume pearl is set in the bezel pip.

The tricompax dial features a 30-minute counter at 3:00, a 12-hour counter with an inset date window at 6:00 and a small seconds display at 9:00. It has stencil-style applied Arabic numerals encircled by a white rehaut with a blue 60-second track accented by red dashes.

The central hands have a black coating to match the case, and the red-tipped chronograph seconds hand coordinates with red hands on both chronograph totalizers.

Just like its counterpart, this aeronautical chronograph is very capable in the water, boasting 300m water resistance. It is powered by Breitling’s COSC-certified B01 automatic movement. Featuring a vertical clutch and column wheel, it beats at 4Hz and offers a 70-hour power reserve.

The movement is visible through a sapphire caseback decorated with the America250 logo.

Availability and pricing

I’ve seen quite a few watches commemorating America’s 250th anniversary, with results ranging from cringy to classic. Breitling’s offering ranks near the top of the list for me, right next to Zenith’s red-white-and-blue Chronomaster Revival.

Breitling’s America250 Avenger collection is available now from Breitling. The Avenger Automatic 42 costs $5,100 and is limited to 250 pieces, while the Avenger B01 Chronograph costs $9,700 and is limited to 50 pieces.
