Blue and black may be the most popular options for watch dials, but Vacheron Constantin is making a strong case for red.

A stunning burgundy lacquered dial has been making its way through the Overseas collection, and now it arrives on the compact Self-Winding 35mm. It is the perfect flash of color for the most demure variation of this iconic integrated sports watch.

The Overseas can trace its heritage back to 1977 with the introduction of the 222, a genre-defining design in league with the Genta-designed Nautilus, Royal Oak and Ingenieur SL. The collection was revived under the Overseas name in 1996, and then underwent a full redesign in 2016. (The 222, for what it’s worth, returned in 2022.)

The Self-Winding 35mm version, introduced in 2023, presents the modern Overseas design in a simple time-and-date format. The applied, faceted hour markers, beveled date window frame and handset are all made of polished 18-karat white gold.

A steel ring separates the sunburst central dial from a glossy chapter ring with a dash minute track. The hour markers, hour hand and minute hand feature blue-emitting Super-LumiNova.

Previous applications of VC’s burgundy dial have come in full 18-karat white-gold cases, but the new 35mm rendition comes in a more traditional, approachable steel case. Contrasting mirror-polished and brushed surfaces add enchanting depth to the industrial-leaning case design.

While the tonneau case shape and integrated bracelet format are inherited from the 222, the six “cog teeth” on the bezel and the angular shape of the Y-links on the bracelet are adapted from VC’s Maltese Cross emblem, which itself is visible on the dial and the signed crown.

A golden opportunity

This Overseas Self-Winding 35mm release also follows last year’s Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin by pairing the burgundy lacquered dial with a full 18-karat pink gold reference. This opulent counterpart sticks to the same 35mm time-and-date format, featuring identical contrasting finishing on the case and bracelet.

Both references feature a svelte 9mm case height, thanks to VC’s ultra-thin in-house Calibre 1088/1 automatic movement. Despite measuring just under 4mm tall, it beats at 4Hz and packs a 40-hour power reserve.

It’s a snap

As with all recent Overseas releases, VC makes good use of its push-button integrated bracelet system. The burgundy Overseas Self-Winding 35-mm is delivered with a steel integrated bracelet secured by a butterfly clasp, along with a burgundy alligator leather strap and a matching textured rubber strap.

Its golden counterpart comes with the same three options, except the bracelet is in matching 18-karat pink gold, and the two straps are both white.

Availability and pricing

The Overseas is a case design that looks great in any size, but I’m personally drawn to the scaled-down 35mm version. It wears modestly at arm’s length, but every detail is condensed, magnifying the brilliant design up close.

The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding 35mm is available now from Vacheron Constantin for $26,600 in steel and $59,900 in 18-karat pink gold.
