The recent Swatch x AP Royal Pop collab has proven to be an incredibly polarizing release, and it’s not just because of the brands involved.
Being part of the Swatch POP line, it hinges upon a playful modularity allowing for use as a pocket watch and even a desk clock. Consequently, it’s a little compromised as a traditional timepiece.
All that is to say that I couldn’t help but see some similarities in a Porsche patent that recently surfaced. However, whereas the Royal Pop is complicated by its design, I’d argue that Zuffenhausen’s take would allow it to fully realize its potential.

A new kind of Sport Chrono
That’s because the documentation, as discovered by Carbuzz, illustrates a Sport Chrono lap timer. Unlike those you’ll currently find in many well-optioned 911s, though, it’s removable.
Accordingly, Porsche describes integration by way of a push-push mechanism allowing for both attachment and removal. In keeping with the Sport Chrono’s free-moving form factor, it would also feature its own dedicated battery so that it could run independent of the car.
