When Todd Snyder stocked the original Marlin reissue in 2017, the designer’s seal of approval boosted Timex’s return to glory. It also helped legitimize a 34mm dress watch for men at a time when that size was reserved for women.
Nearly a decade later, the New York menswear label and Waterbury watchmaker remain one of the most prolific partnerships in the affordable watch market. The latest release is another iteration on that original Marlin reissue, featuring an updated dial and a revived bracelet.
The new Marlin Mesh is named after the Milanese-style stainless steel bracelet it comes on. This mesh bracelet was introduced with the Marlin’s second generation in 2018, initially paired with a silver dial, and later added in black.
The addition of a steel mesh bracelet was Todd Snyder’s second of many Marlin collaborations, after adding a black dial the previous year. The new Marlin Mesh shares most of its look with the second-generation design, but there is one key functional difference.
Along with the bracelet, the Marlin Mesh uses the original 34mm round polished steel Marlin case, topped with a domed acrylic crystal.
However, inside the case beats a quartz movement, rather than the hand-wound movement that lent so much intrigue back in 2017. Stigmas aside, it is certainly more reliable than the notoriously troublesome mechanical movement, and it allows for a ridiculously affordable $199 price.
