Back in September, Baltic completely overhauled its flagship Aquascaphe after a seven-year run as one of the market’s most beloved affordable dive watches.

The “MK2” update added Lumicast solid ceramic lume indices in place of the original sandwich dial, upsized hands, more lume, a fully marked bezel and a more modern case design in two sizes: 39.5mm and 37mm.

One thing the update didn’t add was a date complication, and people noticed. While many dive watch purists and watch enthusiasts, including yours truly, prefer the toolish, no-date look for a dive watch, others like the practicality of a date … especially if they plan on using the watch as their everyday watch.

Baltic says “many” fans requested a date, and the brand has finally listened to those pleas with the launch of the Aquascaphe MK2 Date.

Dated

Chief among Baltic‘s considerations when adding a date to the Aquascaphe was doing so in a way that had minimal impact on the look of the watch. After all, the Aquascaphe is known for its beauty and symmetrical, simple design, so carelessly tossing the typical white date window at 3:00 would completely throw off the watch’s admirable aesthetic.

Instead, Baltic has incorporated the date window at 6:00 to preserve the symmetry of the dial, with the window completely replacing the 6:00 index. Although this means you lose some lume, the overall vibe of the watch remains intact.

Next, Baltic chose to color-match the date window to the dial on each of the Aquascaphe MK2’s four colorways. The Blue, Grey and Green options all get date discs to match their respective dials with white printing, while the “Warm Silver” option, which is an off-white, receives an off-white date disc with black numerals. The date windows are also framed in white or black to match the other markings on each dial.

This approach has led to some of the most minimally obtrusive date windows you’ll find, with the date essentially disappearing into the dial unless you’re looking for it. It’s a great way to incorporate a date into the Aquascaphe while still keeping that vintage, toolish look for which the watch is known.

With the date comes a new movement, the Miyota Calibre 9015. This automatic engine has all of the same specs as the Miyota 9039 that powers the no-date version of the watch, with the only difference being, you guessed it, the addition of a date. The added date adds no thickness to the Aquascaphe’s case.

Availability and pricing

The date option is available on the entire Aquascaphe MK2 line, across all four colors and both case sizes. Since it is a complication, however, adding the date does tack on about 30 bucks to the price.

Without the date, the Aquascaphe MK2 is priced starting at ~$718.20 on a rubber strap in either size. With the date, that starting price bumps up to ~$746.70. That’s still well below $1,000, and the Aquascaphe remains one of the best values in dive watches.

The Aquascaphe MK2 Date is available now from Baltic.
