Baltic has a strong reputation for offering gorgeous tool watches with vintage-inspired looks and respectable specs at remarkably fair prices.

While the brand has dabbled in dress watches, none have resonated with fans like the divers and chronographs. That is, with the notable exception of the limited-edition Prismic Stone series released in 2024.

The Prismic Stone was initially released as a “showroom edition” available exclusively at Baltic’s temporary pop-ups in Paris, London and New York.

It toned down the design of the standard Prismic and allowed the natural texture of the stone to shine through an impeccably suave dial arrangement.

Anyone who missed out on the long-gone release will be thrilled to hear that the Prismic Stone is now part of Baltic’s permanent collection, with the only significant change being four new varieties of rock comprising the dial plates.

The rest of the dial remains an homage to the Patek Philippe Calatrava, which was introduced in 1936 and has since stood as the forefather of all round dress watches. It has inspired every brand from Grand Seiko to Timex, but the Prismic Stone is one of the best examples available for under $2,000.

Four new stones

The original Prismic, also released in 2024, has an audacious dial that is a bit too “1980s” for my taste. It features a sector dial with pyramidal stud hour markers and an interesting radial texture underlying everything.

The Prismic Stone retains the dauphine hands. The hour and minute hands have a flat top with a beveled edge, while the small seconds hand is faceted.

Almost everything else about the dial is different. The pointed, chamfered baton hour markers from three and nine o’clock on the original now encircle the entire dial, save for a small diamond shape at six o’clock that makes room for the small seconds.

A double baton at noon is also carried over, and the small seconds track is now a simple set of 12 dashes.

The original limited-edition Pirsmic Stone came in lapis lazuli, jade and agate. Anyone looking for the bright orange agate is out of luck, but the new collection features a tonal blue dumortierite and green bloodstone with traces of copper flecks.

A vibrant pink albite with a cloudy texture and a mesmerizing pietersite that blends tones of gray, orange, brown and black in a swirling haze round out the collection.

So metal

Despite its simple look at arm’s length, the Prismic Stone has an innovative and intricately finished case design. The bezel, lugs and caseback are made of stainless steel, while the middle case is made of grade 5 titanium, cutting down on weight.

The stepped bezel is polished on the inner edge and brushed on the outer edge. Similarly, the lugs are polished on top and brushed on the sides.

Even with a domed sapphire crystal, the 36mm case is only 9.2mm tall thanks to the La Joux-Perret Caliber D100 hand-wound movement inside. This respectable hand-cranker is only 2.5mm tall, but it packs a 50-hour power reserve.

Availability and price

All four new references of the Baltic Prismic Stone have joined Baltic’s permanent collection and are now available online and at Baltic’s newly opened Paris boutique.

It is available on a brushed steel Milanese bracelet or a pebbled calfskin pin buckle strap in black or camel. The Albite, Bloodstone and Dumortierite versions each cost $1,577 on the bracelet and $1,508 on a strap, while the Pietersite is priced at $1,751 and $1,682, respectively.
