In 2015, G-Shock expanded its Master of G line with an “extreme land” model, the Mudmaster. It wasn’t just shock-resistant and durable but was engineered to keep fine dirt, sand and mud from getting inside the watch.

Since then, the Mudmaster has evolved considerably, becoming the watchmaker’s flagship. The GG-B1000 became the first to introduce Carbon Core Guard construction and Bluetooth connectivity. And it even added step tracking, a fourth sensor to go along with the altimeter/barometer, compass and thermometer.

Needless to say, the Mudmaster is arguably G-Shock’s most rugged option. However, with its latest version, you’d never guess it.

Into the sunset

Launched as part of its Master of Horizon Gold series, this new Mudmaster variant (GG-B100XMH-5A) features a beautiful stainless steel bezel finished in a yellow-gold ion plating. According to the brand, it’s “inspired by the golden horizon where earth meets sky.”

Locked down with a brown cage, the bezel foregrounds a black carbon case and a dark brown resin strap. Other components, such as the metal pins in the bezel receive brown ion plating.

The analog-digital dial is black but features matching gold on the hands, numerals and indices. It’s lit with LED for nighttime visibility at the push of a button.

Mr. Beast

Despite the glamorous bezel, the watch is still just as rugged as ever. It’s still water resistant to 200m and still boasts a carbon fiber-reinforced resin inner case, providing excellent rigidity and shock resistance. There’s also a mud filter and shock-resistant caseback.

The timepiece’s functions are also just as impressive, with the aforementioned Quad Sensor tech, along with Mission Log, which automatically records your altitude throughout your journey. Via the smartphone app, it can use your phone’s GPS to record and display outdoor activity data. The time is also kept accurate with smartphone connectivity.

This Mudmaster is still the same beast you know and love, spanning 51.3mm across the case and 19.4mm in thickness. However, the horizon-inspired bezel arguably gives you something better to look at.
