G-Shock is arguably the ruggedest watch brand in Japan, although its reputation for crafting formidable timepieces extends worldwide.

Yet, even among the Casio sub-brand’s vast catalog of incredibly tough offerings, there is still a hierarchy. And the Master of G series sits right up at the tippy-top.

The latest addition to that lineup is the G-Shock Mudmaster GWG-B1000MG-1A9JR, a deeply impressive outdoor watch that draws style inspiration from one of our planet’s harshest environments.

Master of mud

The Master of G watch lineup comprises several categories of timepieces, each specifically designed for an environment or activity. Models include the Frogman (for diving), Rangeman (for survival and field use) and Gravitymaster (aviation).

This watch is a Mudmaster, which is specialized for use in extreme outdoor environments, with a particular aim toward resisting the ill effects of debris and filth.

There are few rugged watches that can survive as thoroughly and offer as many useful tools as this one.

That means the case, while also offering the brand’s legendary shock resistance, is also highly impervious to being negatively impacted by water, mud, sludge, silt, sand, dust and so on.

The watch also has an incredible array of other built-in features that are highly useful for outdoor exploration. That includes an integrated altimeter (as well as an altitude change tracker), an onboard thermometer, a barometer (to measure air pressure) and much more.

Truly, there are few rugged watches that can survive as thoroughly and offer as many useful tools as this one. And yet, that’s not all it has to offer …

Liquid-hot magma

At its core, this is still very much a G-Shock. And that comes with some expectations (like the shock-resistant core guard). Perhaps obviously, in addition to its exceptional abilities, it also has a full array of other functions that are more broadly useful.

For instance, it is water resistant to 200 meters (along with being impervious to mud and the like, although these go somewhat hand-in-hand). It also has radio-wave reception and a 300-city world timer function, so it’ll stay accurate and synced to the correct time no matter where you are.

Furthermore, it has solar charging, which is remarkably convenient and means no batteries or winding to worry about. And it is compatible with the brand’s Bluetooth mobile app, which makes controlling it a cinch.

However, the most unique feature of this watch is in its styling and colorway. The orange, red, gold and black motif is directly inspired by volcanic activity (and speaks to the watch’s purpose and toughness).

But it’s not just looks. For instance, the metal pieces have an IP finish that adds some durability, and the unique resin strap is made by layering and mixing different colors to achieve a look inspired by volcanic rock and other geological strata.

Once again, G-Shock has proven its penchant for style and substance in this remarkable timepiece.

While it (probably) wouldn’t survive falling into a volcano, it can definitely get you right up to the edge (and back again).
