BMW’s Best-Looking Midsize Adventure Bike Package Is Easier to Get Than You Might Think

This particularly potent treatment may appear elusive, but those who dare can absolutely gin one up.

We all know the feeling. You come across some amazing motorcycle (or other product), only to discover that for one reason or another, it’s not available where you live.

I had just such an experience recently, thanks to BMW Motorrad France, of all things.

Two black and silver BMW adventure motorcycles are parked side by side on a paved surface with a wooden fence and green hills in the background. Both bikes have windshields and off-road tires, with the one on the right appearing slightly larger and more robust.
Of the two Dark Editions, the “none more black” F 900 GS (left) is arguably more attractive – and certainly more affordable — than the R 1300 GS (right).

Reading about its new limited-edition Dark edition adventure bikes, I couldn’t help but feel them turning up their noses while talking merde about silly Americans.

The second half of that last sentence was of course all in my head.

The rider-friendly action is backed up by a roaring 895cc parallel twin engine making 105 horsepower and 68 pound-feet of torque, more than enough to tackle tarmac and trail.

Upon further review, so was my conclusion that the stunning R 1300 GS Dark Edition and even more dazzling F 900 GS Dark Edition could only be had in the land of wine and cheese.

In truth you can bag these bikes stateside too. It just takes a bit more work and, yes, cash.

French twist

Let’s start by examining the offers that BMW’s French site is touting on its home page.

Essentially, it’s hyping two “Dark Edition” that not only boast badass paint schemes but also hand-picked option packages that have never been more affordable.

The black-heavy paint scheme is perfectly complemented by the silver and grey of the exhaust system.

While some moto-specific sites are amped about the bigger bike, I happen to think the more monochromatic F 900 GS steals the show.

Counter to the more common, colorful approach to ADV aesthetics, this bike is almost entirely black, save for some branding, three red stripes on the seat and a gorgeous silver exhaust system capped off by an Akrapovič silencer.

BMW engines rarely leaving you wanting, and this 895cc parallel twin is no exception.

Adding to the appeal is the Dynamic Pack, which includes Pro riding modes and the Shifter Pro quickshifter, making the 482-pound beast easier and more fun to ride.

As with any F 900 GS, the rider-friendly action is backed up by a roaring 895cc parallel twin engine making 105 horsepower and 68 pound-feet of torque, more than enough to tackle tarmac and trail.

American spirit

Through the end of September, those lucky French can snag this combo for €12,500 including VAT, a saving of €2,575 over the typical €15,075. Translation: ~$14,631, roughly $3,014.

That is a pretty sweet deal, but it’s worth noting that the paint job is not exclusive to France, nor is the Dynamic Pack.

The former is called Blackstorm Metallic, and it’s actually the base color of the US model, meaning no additional cost.

You then need only to add the “Premium Package,” which includes Gear Shift Assist Pro and Rides Modes Pro plus a tire pressure monitor and electronic cruise control. You can also swap in off-road tires for just $55 more.

Granted, the grand total (sans off-road tires) is $16,570, more than $2,000 more than the French deal.

On the upside, considering the entire country is smaller than Texas, you’ve got just a bit more space to ride your beautiful new bike.
