Cooking while overlanding can get complicated, and fast.

Sure, having a rig to roam in means you can pack every pot, pan and cast iron skillet you’d like without having to worry about weight.

But when it comes down to the actual prep, cooking and cleanup, things often get messy and disorganized.

That is, unless you drive up with something like ARM’s new Slide-Out Camp Kitchen in your rig.

To the left, there is a slide-out side table holding a sandwich on a paper plate, lettuce, tomato, bread slices, two black mugs, a red cup, and a silver coffee maker. The background shows greenery and part of a green vehicle.

Gourmet, anyone?

My 2003 Ford F350’s tailgate is approximately 67 inches x 26 inches, meaning I have 12 square feet of cooking space to work with … and things still get cramped.

I know from experience that having a slide-out kitchen would turn things from disordered to seamless in no time, and ARB’s reputation for creating high-quality, reliable off-road accessories signals to me that the Slide-Out Kitchen is a slam-dunk.

The Slide-Out Kitchen comes in two sizes, and each come with two-burner propane powered stove, sink, storage drawer and plenty of bench space.

The two-burner stove comes with 8530 BTU/h of output each, with a dependable 1.5V DC battery igniter and nice, high wind screens.

In my rig, I’ve got a blue bin that I load onto the tailgate that serves as my wash-up station. The Slide-Out’s fold-out, 7.3-quart collapsible silicone sink (with a plug!), paired with the massive (19 wide x 36.5 inches long) 304 Stainless steel kitchen grade bench top looks like a dreamy, much cleaner alternative.

Locked and loaded

The Slide-Out Kitchen, as the name might suggest, is designed to slide in and out of your rig seamlessly, providing utility when you need it and staying out of the way when you’re done cooking.

The fully retractable extension roller design provides total clearance from the vehicle, so you won’t have to worry about your camp kitchen messing up your tailgate.

Once it’s fully extended and locked into place, the Slide-Out Kitchen is freestanding and doesn’t require a support leg. As someone who has untangled her dog’s leash from camp furniture too many times, this design feature alone is a reason to purchase.

Under the gigantic benchtop, a built-in utensils drawer means you won’t be searching frantically for a fork or spoon, and it’s also a convenient place to store the propane hose and collapsible sink when the kitchen isn’t in use.

To the right, a can of illy coffee sits on the stove's side surface, and a collapsible gray sink basin is pulled out below. The setup is attached to the back of a vehicle.

ARB designed the Slide-Out Kitchen using the same dimensions as its existing full-height drawer profiles, which means this system can be installed as a standalone unit, or it can be accompanied by any of ARB’s drawers to create a custom modular system.

The entire steel system is 158 pounds, while its load rating is 55 pounds. The 1045 is suited to large SUVs, wagons, and some trucks, while the 1355mm size is ideal for larger vehicles, such as dual-cab trucks.

Availability and pricing

Although it brings a healthy amount of convenience to cooking in the wild, ARB’s slide-out unit comes with a healthy price tag, as well. Chalk it up to quality construction and materials.

The Slide-Out Kitchen from ARB is available now for $2,496 at the brand’s official website
