There was a time not too long ago when you couldn’t type “everyday carry” into a search bar without coming upon a bevy of minimalist cardholders. For a time, the category dominated the wallet conversation.

Then, just as quickly as it rose to prominence, the bubble burst. It’s not that the category disintegrated, per se, so much as that the concept became all-too-commonplace, and innovation seemed to evaporate.

Finally, one of the most trusted brands from that golden era has returned with a potential proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. Could Dango’s SK1 Slide Kick Wallet bring this once-ubiquitous category back from the dead?

Kick out the jams

Slim cardholders, even now, are a dime a dozen. These days, you can find them in droves even at big box retailers. So it requires a certain flair in order to stand out.

In the Dango SK1 Slide Kick, that flair is found in its deployment system. Whereas most cardholder wallets are manual (meaning you have to reach in and wrench your cards free) this one has a handy, useful, clever assisted mechanism.

Pinching the wallet between your thumb and fingers horizontally, you can slide the top panel of the wallet slightly forward (hamburger-style). This automatically ejects and fans out up to six cards inside, making them far easier to access and select than typical cardholders.

While that concept isn’t unique to this wallet, the execution is more precise, elegant and original than others. In fact, Dango owns a patent on the internal rail system.

While the convenience of the patented deployment mechanism is arguably the most significant element of this new wallet, it’s far from the sole highlight. And that’s a good thing, because novel tech isn’t enough to set any cardholder apart.

As mentioned, the wallet can hold up to six credit card-sized cards inside it. However, you can also insert fewer without sacrificing its capacity and convenience.

It also offers RFID protection to keep your cards safe from skimming (while not as prevalent as it once was, the extra protection still offers peace of mind.) And the whole thing is precision-CNC-machined from aerospace-grade aluminum, making it strong and lightweight.

Finally, there’s an available, additional, removable titanium money clip — which can be purchased separately or together — should you want a means to carry cash, as well.
