Although a relatively small brand, Unimatic boasts a giant-sized reputation nonetheless. This Italian microbrand has made waves with its minimalist, military-inspired aesthetic, winning the hearts of many a watch fanatic in the process.

The brand’s Modello Due field watch is arguably its most iconic offering. Now, that watch is entering a new era with the model’s first travel-friendly complication in the Unimatic Modello Due U2-GMT.

Field trip

At its core, this watch remains true to its Modello Due siblings. To put it another way, it is still a very minimalist field watch.

In fact, it maintains its smaller, more wearable 38 millimeter sizing. It also still has a brushed stainless steel case and the brand’s signature geometric hour markers on the dial (complete with Super-LumiNova lume on the markers and hands, including the new GMT hand.)

The dial gets 24-hour markings around its circumference to pair with the new GMT hand, as well as a date window.

Other returning elements include a 41-hour power reserve, an impressive 300-meter water resistance rating and an anti-reflective double-domed sapphire crystal.

All of this is to say that lovers of the original watch will be happy to find that the elements that make it so iconic remain largely intact. However, some key differences help set this watch apart from all others.

Icon reimagined

Perhaps it’s an obvious statement, but the chief difference between this watch and previous Modello Due models is its GMT function, which allows users to keep track of the time in a second time zone without sacrificing the watch’s standard functionality. Still, it needs to be said that this is the root of the watch’s differences.

That starts with the elements on the dial. As mentioned, the watch now has an additional GMT hand, noted by its larger Delta tip. That hand coincides with the new 24-hour numerical markers that surround the otherwise minimalist dial.

Because the GMT functionality necessitates it, this watch also gets a slightly different movement from its predecessors: the automatic GMT NH34A movement. It also gets a new date window at the 6 o’clock position, which isn’t found in the original Modello Dues.

Lastly, as this is a travel watch and not a typical field watch, it also gets a different strap: a dressier, yet still durable TPU option. All told, the updates are as subtle as they could be, offering an excellent balance of classic looks and novel features.
