Jeep’s Most Ambitious Off-Roader Is Still Coming, but Is It Too Late to the Party?

Despite the automaker re-embracing its high-octane gas powertrains, the highly anticipated Recon EV is still slated for production.

Jeep first announced intentions to field its ambitious all-electric off-roader (the Recon) back in 2022.

At the time, the automaker exhibited a rendered concept of the SUV, planning to show off a finalized version the following year with production eventually slated to begin in 2024.

Of course, those timelines have since come and gone, and the Recon is nowhere to be seen on the road. While this has sparked speculation that the rugged EV is now dead in the water, it turns out that Jeep is still bringing the model to market after all.

The Recon is still on

The confirmation comes from CEO Bob Broderdorf in a recent interview speaking to MotorTrend. During the talk, the Jeep boss seemed cautious but determined to remain committed to getting the Recon over the line. A reveal is expected soon, and a production announcement should follow in the coming months.

Even if demand for EVs across the board has softened, there’s no denying that boxy vehicles are still hotter than ever.

As such, when asked about the potential for faltering demand, he stated, “We’ve got a great car. We’ve already built it. We should sell it, we should learn. I don’t know how many it will be. I’m not really that worried about it.”

Regardless of the effect that the lack of Federal EV tax incentives will have on buyers’ spending habits, Jeep isn’t backing down from the challenge. In other words, per Broderdorf, “It is okay if (the Recon) is low volume.”

For good reason. If the EV is to be as complete an SUV as Jeep has promised, it could land with some serious off-road capability. Between electronic locking differentials, a trick traction control system, underbody protection and removable doors, Jeep is keen to prove that the all-electric Recon can be a real-deal 4×4.

Will there be a niche big enough to justify the Recon’s existence? Only time will tell.

Now, being based on the Stellantis STLA Large platform, the Recon was never going to be a direct replacement for the Jeep Wrangler. Rather, the two models are to live alongside one another as distinct options for different kinds of buyers. Though the Recon is to slot in below the Wrangler, it will make for a more refined experience.

Mixed energy, mixed decisions

Across the industry, automakers are reversing course on their ambitious all-electric initiatives, many of which were implemented just a few years ago. Between slow consumer demand, a high cost of development and some ever-changing politics, it’s not like EVs have had an easy run of things thus far.

As such, even though Jeep is still committed to bringing the Recon to market, the SUV may be too late to make an impact when it finally does arrive.

After all, Stellantis has proven to be especially mixed in its so-called mixed energy approach. From reviving the Hemi for the Ram 1500 and discontinuing the Ramcharger EREV to extending Alfa Romeo production timelines and dropping Dodge Charger EV trim options, each of its marques made aggressive changes to its powertrain strategy.

Jeep included. Whether through the re-revival of the Wrangler 392 Final Edition or the cancellation of the Gladiator 4xe, the brand has continued to play some of its greatest hits while stepping back from some of its more future-facing initiatives.

The rumble of a Hemi V8 will make it hard for the Recon to stand out — even within its own lineup.

All the more so because the relaxing of emissions standards in the United States means that the legendary V8 will continue to have a home in the Jeep lineup for the foreseeable future.

Regardless of how amazing the Recon could be upon debut, then, will the EV be able to make itself heard over the sound of a 6.4-liter Hemi bellowing from beneath the hood of its 392 Wrangler stablemate? Rivian has already managed to carve out a niche for itself, and Scout is moving closer to production, so Jeep will certainly have some competition.
