Nine times out of ten, celebrity clothing lines are a cash grab that jump on prevailing trends and trade on a hyped name.

With its debut collection, Post Malone’s Austin Post proves that it is one of the rare tenth examples.

The collection is steeped in the modern Western apparel that the musician was surely surrounded by growing up outside of Dallas, Texas, in the 2000s. However, every piece has a refined finish influenced by an acquired taste for luxury labels like Celine and Dior.

No piece demonstrates this crossover better than the Suede Trucker Jacket. It is a foundational piece of American workwear, the Levi’s Type III jacket, executed on a luxury tier.

The denim of Levi’s original design, which has been replicated countless times, is replaced with sturdy suede. The customary rivet buttons are signed with the Austin Post logo.

The only other details that come close to branding on the outside are a Western-inspired pointed yoke on the back and visible white stitching from where the tag is attached below the collar.

Speaking to GQ before hosting his first fashion show in Paris this past September, Post Malone explained that his new brand “just came as a spur-of-the-moment type deal. I’ve always wanted to make clothes, so I figured, ‘Why the fuck not now? Why not do it just right now?'”

For someone with no clothing design experience, Austin Post — the musician’s birth name — displays a clear and succinct vision. As GQ’s Eileen Cartrer points out, the debut collection mirrors Post Malone’s personal style over the past few years.

Unlike most celebrity clothing brands, Austin Post has very little marketing behind it. The clothing is just out there, left to speak for itself, with photos of Post Malone’s friend on his Utah ranch making up the bulk of the imagery.

I respect the brand’s straightforwardness, but Austin Post’s web store provides scant details about most of the products. No explanation is given about the type of suede used for the Suede Trucker, where it comes from or the properties of any other materials.

Going by the images and the disclosure that it is made in Turkey, a country whose textile industry has become popular among European brands, I have no reason to believe that the Suede Trucker isn’t well-made.

Beer for my horses

Austin Post is nothing original, but that isn’t the point. Most of the top menswear brands, like Todd Snyder, Buck Mason and Taylor Stitch, reinterpret tried-and-true staples through a particular lens.

Like Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani before him, Post Malone is just producing the clothing he is familiar with and wants to wear in the quality he has become accustomed to. I’m not saying he’s the next legendary designer, but he’s operating with the same spirit and intention.

And it certainly isn’t a cash grab because $248 jeans, $398 canvas jackets and $68 baseball hats are on par with mid-tier menswear.

Austin Post is far from the first brand to elevate the Levi’s Type III jacket with suede, but the fact that it is selling for $998 — a fraction of the price for equivalent jackets from luxury labels — says everything you need to know about this brand’s genuine nature.

Post Malone’s clothing label is a true passion project, another outlet for a brilliantly creative person to express themselves. It’s giving midwestern style the elevated platform that coastal style has had for decades, and I’m here for it.

Availability and price

The Austin Post Suede Trucker Jacket is available now from Austin Post in tan and black for $998.

According to GQ, the brand is in talks with retailers for wholesale distribution. But, as of now, it is only available directly from the brand’s website.
