Mercedes Overhauls Its Most Rugged Off-Roader with Authoritative Power and Elevated Style

The brand’s Special Trucks division celebrates a big milestone with a hard-hitting build that’s truly out of this world.

For decades now, the Mercedes-Benz Unimog has served as the gold standard in off-road capability, versatility and toughness. From fire trucks to farming harvesters, it’s done it all.

As you’d expect to be the case with such a utilitarian vehicle, traditionally, the Unimog has been proven pretty spartan in its interior furnishings.

However, Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks has just unveiled a new take on the off-roader that it’s billing as the most powerful and luxurious example yet.

An 80th anniversary celebration

It comes based on the rugged and capable Unimog U 4023, and it’s the result of a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Hellgeth Engineering. Together, the pair set out to make an off-roader befitting the 80th anniversary of the Special Trucks division.

Accordingly, even though the U 4023 already brings desirable items like portal axles, selectable all-wheel drive and longitudinal and differential locks on both axles, the build team decided to treat the truck to further choice upgrades.

In practice, along with ditching the stock four banger in favor of a 300-horsepower Mercedes-Benz six-cylinder for improved response, this meant replacing the exterior mirrors with a digital camera and monitor system for added visibility.

But that’s not all. Inside, the team upholstered the cab with swathes of premium leather, accenting the seats with colored stitching and even crafting the floor mats out of high-quality hide.

In combination with a set of exterior revisions consisting of matte grey paint, aluminum beadlocks and a distinctive lighting overhaul, it makes for a highly indulgent Unimog that’s reminiscent of the Mercedes G in more ways than one.

Mercedes might actually build it

While the U 4023 before you is a one-off show vehicle, that’s not to say that the notion of an ultra-luxurious Unimog is consigned to being a concept.

Quite the contrary, in fact, as Mercedes-Benz states that it built the rig to “gain valuable insights for a possible future development stage.”

To that end, while this luxurious Unimog is a show vehicle for the time being, Mercedes has stated that it will “be tested by a customer in real-world conditions next year.”

As surprising as it may seem that the brand’s Special Trucks division would be eyeing up a new ultra-premium consumer offering, it does start to make sense when you consider vehicles like the G-Wagen.

Think G-Wagen drivers are bad? Imagine having an impatient Unimog owner tailgating your bumper as they make their way over to Rodeo Drive.

After all, even though there was once a time when Mercedes-Benz was primarily known for its stately sedans, the brand’s boxy 4×4 has recently proven to be one of its most popular and profitable offerings.

A Unimog takes the SUV’s tank-like security to the extreme, and the addition of some luxury amenities ensures that it brings the same level of comfort and refinement. However, given that a G550 starts at over $150k and a Unimog will run you north of $200k, something like this U 4023 wouldn’t come cheap.
