The Iconic EDC Pen That NASA Sent to the Moon Gets an Affordable, Bolt-Action, Multi-Tool Sibling

The Fisher Space Pen is one of the most important writing utensils ever invented — that’s not an exaggeration. Not only is this the pen NASA has entrusted to its astronauts for more than half a decade — it even went to the moon during the Apollo missions — but it has had a significant cultural impact (it even famously appeared in Seinfeld).

So, how does one improve upon a decades-running icon? Making it more rugged and capable and giving it a new deployment is a good starting point. Or at least that appears to be the brand’s stance with the new Fisher Space Pen Measure Twice.

This is not a complete ground-up reimagining of the Fisher Space Pen, and that’s a very good thing. The core concept of the original pen remains intact, despite the bevy of alterations and additions.

Actually, part of what makes it a Fisher Space Pen isn’t a part of the pen’s structure at all. Instead, it’s the replaceable cartridge inside.

While this pen is compatible with any PR refill, it comes with a Fisher Pressurized PR4 with black ink. That means it can write upside-down, underwater and in zero gravity, just like the one sent to the moon in 1969.

Unlike that pen, however, there are some noteworthy differences this one has that could make it a much more formidable EDC, travel, tactical and adventure-ready writing utensil.

Tactical yet practical

While I can’t say with absolute certainty that this is the brand’s first bolt-action pen, it is definitely the only one in its catalog. That’s a big departure from its other designs, which rely on either caps, a clicker or a twist-activated mechanism. It also makes this pen very fidget-friendly.

The pen is crafted from anodized aluminum, as opposed to the original’s chrome-plated brass. That makes it lighter but still incredibly strong — resistant to corrosion, scratches and impacts.

That last resistance factor is especially important, considering the pen is actually built, in part, for impacts. Opposite the writing tip, it has an emergency glass-breaker. And it has ruler markings down the side of its body — Imperial (up to 3.5 inches) and Metric (up to 9cm) — hence the “Measure Twice” in its name.

Those additional functions and durability place this pen firmly in the realm of tactical use, especially given how capable it is of scribbling anywhere and everywhere. Of course, that ruggedness also means you can depend on it for office, EDC and travel usage all day, every day.
