Mission is a British hi-fi manufacturer specializing in audiophile-grade loudspeakers, with a history dating back to the late 1970s.

Today, it offers numerous speaker ranges, but it has recently gotten into more traditional hi-fi — in 2022, it introduced the 778X stereo amplifier ($900), its first new amp since the mid-1980s.

Now, Mission is introducing its first-ever music streamer, designed to match its 778X stereo amplifier — they share a similar 80s-inspired, half-width design — and bring it into the modern hi-fi age.

The brand’s first music streamer

The Mission 778S is a wireless music streamer that is designed to be the perfect digital partner for its 778X amplifier. (It can be paired with other amplifiers, of course, but its matching aesthetic and footprint make it stackable for the 778X.)

The brand is calling the 778S “a complete, future-ready streaming hub.”

Naturally, the 778S brings high-resolution Wi-Fi streaming into the fold. Mission partnered with Silent Angel, the network streaming specialists, so the 778S runs a custom version of its streaming engine and works with its app (iOS and Android compatible). It also utilizes Mission’s circuitry design and an audiophile-grade 32-bit DAC (Sabre ES9038Q2M).

Adds high-fidelity streaming

The 778S supports most major streaming services and protocols, including AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect and TuneIn Radio. It’s also Roon Ready. Two notable exceptions are that it lacks support for Google’s Chromecast and doesn’t have built-in Bluetooth.

For those with extensive digital libraries, it supports most Hi-Res and Lossless audio formats, including FLAC, Apple Lossless and WAV files. And it can handle audio up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512.

As far as physical connections, Mission’s 778S has most bases covered.

It packs balanced XLR and RCA outputs for connecting to a larger analog system (including the brand’s 778X amplifier), as well as coaxial, optical, and USB-A digital outputs. It has USB-C and two USB-A ports for connecting to your laptop or desktop, too. It even functions as a headphone amp with a 6.35mm jack, too.

According to Mission, the 778S “completes the system,” which consists of the 778X stereo amplifier and the 778CDT CD transport. All of them are stackable and have matching half-width designs.
