“The 20-Year Rule” is a widely accepted concept in fashion, describing how trends resurface roughly every two decades.

I’m old enough to remember when Uggs were the bane of the footwear world between 2010 and 2018 — and when they were the height of cool in the early 2000s.

While the brand has undeniably made a comeback from its dark years, these aren’t the cozy slip-ons I grew up with.

Case in point: the new Tasman Lace, which brings a unique, arguably utilitarian aesthetic to one of Ugg’s core styles.

Uggs may be back, but they’re not the same slip-ons of days gone by.

What goes around, comes around

If the continuing ugly shoe trend is responsible for launching Ugg back into the zeitgeist, fans of untraditional footwear will go gaga over the new Tasman Lace, which adds a distinctive dual-lace system to an otherwise standard slipper.

You have to admit — these are a pretty fun, if unexpected, take on a classic.

While there are obvious style points here — the two-toned laces offer both myriad tying options and a very unique aesthetic — there’s also subtle utility, too.

Could you potentially use these laces in an emergency situation? Sure. Could you also tie them in funky knots and experiment with your style? Of course.

Should you require a little more stability, the laces could be tightened down to provide a more secure fit, thanks to the daisy-chain like webbing that can be found near the sidewall and collar of the shoe.

These are unique enough that they’ll go with anything you throw on. Sky’s the limit.

Like its more traditional Ugg counterparts, the Tasman Lace features the same ultra-plush feel that made the original aprés-surf slip-ons enviable in the first place.

Thanks to the suede upper, classic sheepskin lining and sugarcane EVA outsole, the stylish slipper is both lightweight and comfortable.

Availability and pricing

The Tasman Lace is available now on Ugg’s official website, with sizes selling out fast. The funky new style retails for $145.
