Seiko is known for crafting some of the best affordable mechanical watches in the world, while its sister brand, Grand Seiko, crafts its watches for the high-priced luxury segment.

For the most part, these two brands are kept on separate paths. But every once in while, those paths cross, such as with Seiko’s recent “root beer” GMT that makes use of a Grand Seiko Spring Drive movement.

The watch I’m discussing today isn’t as much of an overt connection between the two brands, but it doesn’t cost $6,600 like that GMT, either. Instead, it’s a new iteration on Seiko’s tried-and-true Presage “Cocktail Time” format that bears some resemblance to one of the most beloved Grand Seiko models ever.

Seiko’s latest Cocktail Time is the “Sakura Aviation,” reference SRPM06. Like all Cocktail Time models, its dial is inspired by a cocktail found at Tokyo’s Star Bar. Also, like other recent Cocktail Time models, it’s not based on a famous cocktail, but rather on one that seems to have been created specifically with a watch in mind.

The Sakura Aviation cocktail, as its name suggests, is a twist on the classic aviation cocktail: a violet-tinged blend of gin, lemon juice, maraschino liqueur and crème de violette served up in a martini glass. The Sakura Aviation, created by Star Bar’s head bartender Hisashi Kishi, is pink instead of purple and uses a cherry blossom-infused gin.

The watch draws its inspiration from the Sakura Aviation cocktail, which itself was inspired by Japan’s springtime cherry blossom season.

The drink was inspired by Japan’s famous springtime cherry blossoms, and although the Sakura Aviation watch’s dial is ostensibly inspired by the drink, it also calls to mind springtime cherry blossoms by association.

To make the connectino, Seiko has given the SRPM06 a mother-of-pearl dial featuring a slightly rippled texture and coated with a gradient pink color. The result is beautiful and delicate, and reminds me a lot of a Grand Seiko icon: Reference SBGA413, better known as Shunbun.

Like the new Cocktail Time, Shunbun takes its inspiration from Japan’s spring cherry blossom season — Shunbun is the Japanese word for the vernal equinox — and it illustrates the connection with a delicately textured, light-pink dial (though not mother-of-pearl).

Unlike the Grand Seiko Shunbun, which has a 40mm titanium case and a Spring Drive movement, the Sakura Aviation is aimed at women with a 34mm x 10.9mm case and bracelet in two-tone stainless steel featuring pink gold-colored coating on the hands, indices, crown and two of the five rows on the Jubilee-style bracelet.

Despite the female marketing, I think the Sakura Aviation would make a great everyday watch for anyone who’s good with the smaller size and pink color (raises hand). It’s water-resistant to a decent 50m and is powered by Seiko’s trusty Caliber 4R35 automatic movement.

The box-shaped crystal is unfortunately Hardlex rather than sapphire (can’t win ’em all), but the screwdown caseback is thankfully solid — there’s really no need for Seiko to continue displaying the utilitarian 4R35 in its watches.

Thankfully, the Cal. 4R35 movement is hidden behind a solid caseback — a rare sight for Seiko these days.

Pricing and availability

Even though the SRPM06 is scheduled to launch later this month, there’s no U.S. pricing as of this writing. However, the watch is priced for the UK market already at £540, which currently converts to $738. I don’t think the watch will cost quite that much in the U.S. — the most expensive Cocktail Time model is currently priced at $625 — but time will tell.

Availability may be a little tricky. The watch is a limited edition of 9,000 pieces, which sounds like a lot, but Seiko has proven me wrong before by quickly selling out limited-edition models with seemingly huge production runs. So I recommend you act quickly if you like the look of this affordable Shunbun alternative.
