Seiko Presage’s lineup of “Cocktail Time” watches has become a dependable go-to for anyone looking for an affordable dress watch that punches well above its weight in terms of looks and specs. This is doubly true of the Cocktail Time GMT models, which add one of watchmaking’s most useful complications to the attractive template.

The Japanese watchmaker has just unveiled its latest Cocktail Time GMT, and it might be the best-looking yet. It does a solid job of imitating Grand Seiko’s iconic SBGM221 with its light-colored dial, dauphine hands and blue GMT hand, but make no mistake, this watch is fully capable of standing on its own four lugs.

Traveling’s silver bullet

The latest Cocktail Time is dubbed the “Silver Bullet,” and no, the name didn’t come from Bob Segar’s band or Coors Light. Instead, it’s named after the cocktail of the same name, which is a mix of gin, kummel (a caraway liqueur) and lemon juice. While the tipple sounds like it might be a bit too herbal for my taste, the watch it inspired is right up my alley.

The dial here is stamped in the typical Cocktail Time fashion, with sunray lines radiating out from the center. The inspiration is said to be a martini glass, and it does create a sense of depth, like looking down into an empty cocktail glass. The dial here is silver, as the name would imply, and it’s punctuated by applied dagger indices.

Appearing as odd numbers between each hour marker are printed Breguet numerals in blue denoting the 24-hour scale for the GMT hand, which is in a matching royal blue color. The 3:00 date window is framed in silver, while the seconds hand is in gold tone, further elevating the luxury vibe of this affordable, travel-ready dress watch.

Powering the watch, as usual, is Seiko’s in-house Caliber 4R34 automatic, a “caller” GMT movement with an independently adjustable fourth hand and quick-set date. It has a power reserve of 41 hours, and it both hacks and hand-winds.

The 40.5mm stainless steel case is mostly polished and quite sharp-looking. It sits fairly compact on the wrist, measuring 47.5mm lug-to-lug, and a decent chunk of its 12.8mm thickness is owed to the box Hardlex crystal.

There’s a signed crown along with an exhibition caseback, and the water-resistance rating is 50m. The watch is paired with a black leather strap featuring blue top stitching, quick-release spring bars and a stainless steel deployant clasp.

Availability and pricing

This is a seriously good-looking addition to the Cocktail Time lineup, and the GMT complication makes it quite a useful travel tool. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this one ends up garnering a bit of a cult following.

The Silver Bullet, ref. SSK049, is slated to be released in June, but as usual, Seiko is dragging its feet in revealing a price for the U.S. market. However, the SSK039 and SSK041, which follow the exact same format in different colors, both have an SRP of $625. So I expect the same for the SSK049 once it launches.
