It’s no exaggeration to say that in 2025, Grand Seiko significantly advanced the field of mechanical watchmaking when it unveiled the Spring Drive U.F.A.

With an accuracy of +\-20 seconds per year, it is one of the most accurate mechanical movements ever devised. Two years on, the U.F.A. has gone from a mind-blowing novelty to the foundation of Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 Collection.

Since its introduction, the Spring Drive U.F.A. automatic movement has trickled into the market, with only four references released in 2025, and an additional three unveiled in April 2026, including the new Ushio 300 Diver.

Grand Seiko’s new E9 overhaul brings the count up to eleven, meaning it powers a third of the brand’s daily-wearing, do-it-all collection. By my math, that means five new watches are equipped with arguably the best automatic movement on the market.

The remaining four references are powered by my personal favorite Grand Seiko movement, the Caliber 9SA5 Hi-Beat automatic. It’s a well-established marvel, featuring the proprietary Dual Impulse Escapement and a twin-barrel system that provides an 80-hour power reserve, despite beating at 5Hz.

Grand Seiko was kind enough to let me preview the new nine-piece E9 release, a substantial drop for the prestigious Japanese watchmaker. It contains some fan-favorite dials like the White Burch and Lake Suwa Blue, alongside updates like a lighter-toned revival of the crystal-green Genbi Valley and a smoky black version of the Lake Suwa.

Ultra Fine

The five new Spring Drive U.F.A. watches joining the E9 collection are powered by the Caliber 9RB2, which is the version with a date complication. The astounding accuracy is achieved through an advanced crystal oscillator and vacuum sealing of that and other key components of the movement.

The Spring Drive U.F.A. dials included in this release are 40mm versions of the White Birch, the blue-green Areta Valley and the Lake Suwa in blue and black. Additionally, the Lake Suwa Blue comes in 37mm.

A material difference

Seven of the nine new E9 watches are presented in Grand Seiko’s Ever-Brilliant Steel, an alloy with the highest corrosion resistance of any steel used in watchmaking. The brand has introduced a new icon, a hexagonal etching with “EB” inside applied to the caseback ring, to indicate the use of this metal on all watches going forward.

The other two watches in the drop use the proprietary High-Intensity Titanium, which does not get a new etched icon. The dials are the Lake Suwa Black for the Spring Drive U.F.A. and the Black Birch for the Hi-Beat.

Small adjustments

Last, but certainly not least, Grand Seiko fans will be pleased to hear that all nine new E9 watches feature a micro-adjustment clasp. It is part of a three-link bracelet, available in both metals, with a sharper taper dropping from 22mm to 18mm.

The clasp has been the most consistent criticism of Grand Seiko for years, and certain sacrifices had to be made to accommodate it, but it is now a standard-issue feature.

Availability and pricing

It’s hard to call $11,000 a good bang-for-your-buck, but with the improved bracelet design, gorgeous assortment of dials and world-beating movement, the new E9 collection will give you the most watch for that budget.

Personally, I was absolutely smitten by the smoky charcoal gray tones of the Lake Suwa Black dial. Set in a High-Intensity Titanium case and running on the Spring Drive U.F.A., it has to be my new favorite Grand Seiko watch.

Grand Seiko is releasing the new E9 series in two stages. The five Spring Drive U.F.A. references will be available in September 2026, priced at $10,200 for Ever-Brilliant Steel and $11,400 for the lone High-Intensity Titanium. The four Hi-Beat 36000 references will follow in October 2026 at the same price tiers.
