Leatherman Quietly Dropped a Super-Affordable Minimalist Multi-Tool

The beloved brand returns to keychain territory with this sleek and handy little accessory, which won’t bust your pocket or your wallet.

Among EDC aficionados, it’s no secret that Portland, Oregon-based Leatherman crafts some of the very best multi-tools on the planet.

While the vast majority of these products are folding, plier-based beasts packed with handy functions, every once in a while, the brand throws a sneaky curveball.

The latest example? A keychain-ready, budget-friendly release called the OPNR.

Tiny answer

For the record, this product is not the brand’s first foray into single-piece keychain multi-tools. 

As my watch-minded colleague Johnny Brayson points out, the brand came out with a whole series of “By the Numbers” mini multi-tools more than a decade ago.

He has the #7 model and swears by its endless handiness.

The new OPNR is not as feature-laden as its numbered predecessors, but it trades on another valuable trait: elegance.

Whereas they are more angular, the OPNR boasts a sleek and rounded form factor that calls to mind another Portland-based EDC outfit, The James Brand.

That means it poses no risk to your pockets — as some pointier alternatives do — and thanks to a small but smart set of functions, it easily outpunches its admittedly feathery weight.

These TSA-friendly elements include a package opener, pry bar, flathead screwdriver and, most indispensable of all, a bottle opener.

I refuse to list “keychain hole” as an included tool — though Leatherman itself does — because that’s not exactly a “function.”

By the way, if the images don’t totally spell out how unobtrusive this product is, the dimensions surely will. 

Just 2.6 inches long by 1.01 inches wide and weighing just over half an ounce, it’s the kind of implement you’ll forget all about till you need it. 

That’s when this small wonder comes up big.
