In the absence of enclosed garage storage space, I have to be pretty pragmatic about what tools I keep to work on my project cars. Moreover, beyond physical space limitations, personal budget constraints mean that I’m not usually buying into fads or filling my shelves with superfluous toys.

However, after hearing about Harbor Freight’s mini toolbox and its unexpectedly awesome organization, I couldn’t resist heading to the closest location to get hands-on with one for myself. I did end up leaving the store with one of those tiny metal chests, but the other item I purchased has proven to be even more useful.

An internet sensation

It’s the Icon Magnetic Tool Mat, and it’s another Harbor Freight product that’s suddenly taken off on Reddit — so much so that it’s transcended its intended utility and become a meme and a means of fostering online popularity.

It’s not without good reason. Despite the mat’s inherent simplicity, it’s naturally performative because of its impressive strength. Whether you’re sticking the product to other surfaces or using its magnetism to hold various ferrous objects, the attraction is fascinating.

As such, with everything from cast-iron pans to automatic firearms serving as props for feats of strength over on r/Harborfreight, Reddit users have more than demonstrated that this Icon release is equally suited to chasing clout and keeping one’s tools organized.

In any event, given the abundance of hype, I was naturally skeptical about how this tool mat would hold up in practice. Surely something so trendy couldn’t actually be as useful as Harbor Freight would have me believe.

To that end, even the cashier at the store I visited was aware of this mat’s popularity. They’re routinely out of stock in some areas, though she also noted that no buyer had been able to explain what exactly they were purchasing it for.

More than a gimmick

How I was wrong.

From the moment I first stuck the Icon magnetic tool mat to my kitchen refrigerator, it’s proven to be an incredibly helpful addition to my space. I wouldn’t have expected a simple magnetic sheet to be so versatile, but it abounds with different use cases.

Whether as a catch-all for your EDC, as an organizer for your knives (kitchen or otherwise) or as a tray for your tools, it provides secure, slip-free storage thanks to its abrasion-resistant surface and tightly spaced magnets.

Whether you’re using the mat for organization or transport, it’s a valuable addition that keeps tools secure.

As such, it’s great for when you’re working on your car, but its utility extends far beyond the garage. I’ve particularly appreciated it for transporting screwdrivers, pliers and various small parts when in the middle of apartment maintenance — everything stays in place rather than rolling around loosely.

Moreover, because the mat features individual rows of cells rather than a solid sheet of magnets, it’s highly flexible and it can be stuck to a variety of surfaces. Be it the corner of your toolbox or the contours under your car’s hood, it enables organization and security where you need it most.

Considering the immense force of attraction — capable of holding everything from kitchenware to other viral Harbor Freight products — this mat’s applications are limited only by your imagination (and available magnetic objects).

Availability and pricing

At $25, the Icon Magnetic Tool Mat could be cheaper. Nevertheless, it’s still a pretty affordable way to help promote organization in your garage. I’d rate it as worth the price of admission, if only for the novelty of suspending objects around your home.

If you’re looking to get your hands on one of these mats, your best bet is to check out your local Harbor Freight. Seeing as they’re routinely out of stock, they’re not always available for order online.
