Harbor Freight’s Icon Magnetic Tool Mat first landed itself in my shopping basket more because of my own impulse than any outright necessity.

Having heard about the pint-sized U.S. General boxes, I’d planned to check one out in person for myself. I did end up taking one of those home, but a growing number of Reddit posts meant that I couldn’t help but snag the retailer’s next viral meme tool.

Still, while it might be something that’s developed a cult-like following, it brings a lot more to the table than just internet points. Moreover, at 20% off, it’s now back to its best value at $19.99.

More than a mat

Apart from some tightly spaced magnets, an abrasion-resistant shell and an 11-inch by 9-inch form factor, there isn’t a lot you need to know about this simple Icon accessory.

That’s because its utility really comes down to what you make of it. As much as I love having the mat for automotive and motorcycle projects, I’ve found that it’s also great when working around the house.
