Snow Peak, the cult camping brand from Japan, is famous for two things.

First: handsome, highly functional gear, most of it made in Japan where the company was founded nearly 70 ago. Second: prices that will make your eyes water.

A small bamboo table, for example, costs $420. And let’s not even get into the family-sized tents.

In other words, it’s the kind of gear that belongs on bucket lists and Pinterest boards but tends to escape budget-conscious campers.

Leave it to Ikea to fill in the gaps.

At home in the outdoors

Expanding from flat-pack bookshelves and everyone’s favorite frozen meatball, the Swedish retailer shows it can also dance in the great outdoors with a new collection called Soluppgång.

Ikea says its designer took inspiration from Japanese urban-outdoor aesthetics and the Norwegian concept of friluftsliv, which translates to “open-air living.”

Highlights include a portable cast iron grill, neutral-colored picnic blanket a dead ringer for Snow Peak’s bamboo table, only at 85 percent discount.

Ikea even made a small metal spork, riffing on one of Snow Peak’s most iconic accessories, albeit in stainless steel instead of titanium.

Of course, quality here remains a far cry from what you’d find in the Snow Peak catalog, where aesthetics are matched only by craftsmanship, high-quality materials and attention to detail.

But who said you need to choose sides?

It’s easy to imagine some of the Soluppgång pieces slotting into Snow Peak kit and vice versa, offering a budget-friendly route for building out a Pinterest-worthy basecamp.

The Soluppgång collection is rolling out now to Ikea location nationwide. Prices start at $4.
