Ikea’s big, blue empire was built on flat-pack furniture and frozen meatballs. But outdoor grills?

The Soluppgång Cast Iron Grill, quietly and conveniently released alongside daylight saving time, isn’t Ikea’s first foray into the category.

However, priced at $80, it’s easily the brand’s cheapest and most compelling offering yet.

The grill itself is part of a lager collection inspired by Japanese urban-outdoor aesthetic and Nordic friluftsliv, which translates to “open-air living.”

Offerings range from picnic blankets to Snow-Peak-adjacent outdoor tables, though the grill presents the largest upside at home and away.

Ikea describes it being built for charcoal fuel, though the cast iron construction looks reasonably well-suited to live-fire wood, too.

The material choice also “helps spread the heat evenly throughout the grill,” the product listing says, while vents encourage adequate airflow for easy lighting and temperate control.

Handles on either side made it easy to transport from the truck bed to the beach or basecamp, and the the whole thing measures around 17 by 8 inches, including a base that elevates it off the ground.

In that capacity, the Soluppgång Cast Iron Grill isn’t really a replacement for your weeknight gas-powered warrior.

Similar to Japanese earthenware cooktops known as konro, it’s the kind of grill you whip out on a whim, when the goal is more about atmosphere (or mouthwatering yakitori) than efficiency.

It’s communal, refreshingly analog and, typical of Ikea, downright affordable compared to the competition.

Last year, the fan-favorite cookware brand Made In sold a similar grill for $499, while the crowdsourced Thaan Grill starts at $429.

The Soluppgång Cast Iron Grill ($80) is available in the US this month, along with the rest of the Soluppgång collection. Prices start at $4.
