If you’ve been looking for an affordable everyday sports watch with traditional field-watch sensibilities, this might be the moment to pause.
A distinctively modern and versatile option from Citizen, launched in 2017, just hit its lowest price we’ve seen since the first half of 2023, making it one of the most affordable options in this category we’ve seen in a while, especially given its more modern features.
A modern, affordable field watch

The Garrison is built around a sizeable 43mm stainless steel case paired with a matching stainless bracelet, giving it a substantial presence on the wrist without crossing into oversized territory.
The dial layout draws clearly from classic field-watch conventions: high-contrast Arabic numerals, bold hands, and a straightforward, no-nonsense design ethos.
The Rolex Explorer comparisons are less overt than with some homage watches, but the connection shows up in the dial’s four enlarged numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 — a hallmark Explorer design cue that gives the watch an immediate legibility and a touch of tool-watch credibility.
Where the Garrison diverges from the Explorer template is in its additional functionality.
Unlike the classic Explorer, which keeps the dial deliberately spare, Citizen’s watch includes a date complication at 3 o’clock. It adds practical value for daily wear, though it does contribute some visual crowding to an otherwise clean dial.
Powering it is Citizen’s Eco-Drive technology, which runs off any light source and eliminates battery changes entirely. The watch is water resistant to 100 meters and features luminous hands, a mineral crystal, and a stainless steel foldover clasp.
