It often seems like everyday backpacks are a dime a dozen. The market is flooded with options, many of which are, honestly, pretty respectable, especially among brands that are worth their mettle.

That makes standing out a herculean task on even the best of days, especially to someone like myself, who sees EDC and travel bags day in and day out.

So, when something like the robust and sleek ASRV Water Resistant Modular Backpack 16L, which expertly combines an EDC-friendly format with tech and capabilities borrowed from the outdoor and tactical worlds, comes across my desk, it tends to catch my eye.

Bag of holding

This pack is an EDC bag in the truest sense of the word. It has a 16-liter capacity, so it’s pretty purpose-driven in that sense. It’s great for hauling day-to-day essentials, but it also doesn’t have the bulk and additional weight of a bigger bag that might be better for travel.

That said, while it looks very svelte and stealthy, it’s not without plenty of quality-of-life features you’d expect out of a bag. That includes things like a padded laptop sleeve in the main compartment, back and strap padding, stabilizing straps, a secondary external zippered pocket and an overall familiar, straightforward format.

The bag has MOLLE webbing on its sides for additional modular expansion, and it comes with a removable small EDC pouch.

However, that’s not what makes this bag special. It’s the other factors, like its construction and modularity, that help set it apart.

For example, the exterior is crafted from Korean-milled 600D nylon with a water-resistant finish, making it much more weatherproof than a run-of-the-mill canvas pack. It also has a ripstop nylon interior that’s easy on your items but can stand up to a lot of punishment.

And that’s only the beginning…

While the included, padded, removable pouch is ideal for a pair of sunglasses, you could feasibly stash other EDC gear just as easily.

Too legit to quit

For some people, 16 liters might just be a little bit too small. Well, ASRV has considered that and rectified the issue with an elegant tactical solution: MOLLE webbing. There are five attachment points on the sides of the bag for additional modules.

In fact, the brand even includes a padded sunglasses MOLLE-compatible pouch that comes with the bag. And that’t not all it borrows from the military world.

The bag also has a separate bottom compartment perfect for dirty or wet gear (it has drainage to suit), which is secured with a pair of COBRA quick-release buckles, which are speedy to operate but can withstand over 750 pounds of pressure (ASRV even tested it in its lab to be sure).

This isn’t an everyday backpack. It’s an every damn day backpack, designed to take the worst you can throw at it and come out the other side swinging. And you’d be lucky to have it in your arsenal.
