Nike’s Premium sneakers are among the brand’s most innovative and technical. Primarily, this series is used as a kind of proof-of-concept, high-end models through which the brand can showcase new innovations.

That also makes them somewhat divisive, as their high price and weight sometimes push them beyond consideration as serious trainers. Nonetheless, they are essential to The Swoosh’s ecosystem.

While these two new Premium versions of two of Nike’s most popular shoes won’t beat the pricing allegations, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the Nike x Melitta Baumeister sneakers, especially for lovers of craftsmanship.

“Run like no one is watching”

This collaboration comprises two sneakers, both of which are among Nike’s most popular and important models of the moment: the Pegasus and the Vomero. Also, as mentioned, they are the premium editions of these sneakers, making them the most high-end in the brand’s vertical rating system (the other two ranks being Plus and Icon).

For the most part, the shoes retain much of their signature elements. The Vomero, for example, still has the same maximum-cushioned outsole with its double Air Zoom units and ZoomX foam midsole. It also retains its breathable engineered mesh upper, durable waffle outsole and more.

The Pegasus is much the same. It retains its signature circular knit upper, which is breathable and comfortable. It also maintains its ZoomX midsole, ReactX foam heel, Waffle outsole and sculpted full-length Air Zoom unit.

Where they begin to diverge, however, is in their styling. And that’s a whole ‘nother story unto itself…

For the love of the craft

The chief difference between these Pegasus and Vomero sneakers and their standard counterparts is their exterior styling. And while the colorways themselves are clearly very vibrant and unusual, that’s only a part of what makes them so interesting.

You see, Melitta Baumeister has gone to painstaking lengths to make these among the most craft-focused sneakers in Nike’s Premium rotation. These sneakers are not mere prints, despite looking like pop art in certain places.

Rather, each and every pair is meticulously hand-painted. Not only does that serve to elevate each shoe, but it also means that no two are exactly alike — even when the model is the same.

The Vomero gets a Total Orange/Black upper with textural prints, a lenticular eye on the tongue, pop-art-style eyes hidden on the bottom of the outsole, and distressing throughout.

The Pegasus gets the same 360-degree distressing, but the other elements are a bit different, including halftone eye prints on the upper insteps, the phrase “run like no one is watching” on the bottom of the outsole and more.

And both have other, smaller details all around the sneakers — inside and out.
