L.L.Bean debuted the Mountain Classic Anorak in 1990, and it became a foundational piece from the golden age of GORP Core.

Maine’s most famous retailer revived the design in 2022 and has maintained an assortment of modern, solid-colored models alongside vintage-faithful designs ever since. Right now, one of the coolest retro models is on double discount.

The Mountain Classic Parka holds a place right behind the Bean Boot and the Boat and Tote as one of L.L.Bean’s most famous products. Anoraks, or smocks as they’re called in Europe, date back to WWII and are based on far older garments, but this lightweight and versatile design helped popularize the outerwear in the 1990s.

Dozens of brands make good anoraks, like Filson’s hefty Shelter Cloth and Fjallraven’s military-adjacent Vardag, but the Mountain Classic Parka can’t be beat for everyday wear. It is especially handy during the rainy spring and blustery fall.

Best of all, L.L.Bean’s anorak offers an incredible value. It normally costs just $70 and stands toe-to-toe with competitors priced over $200. Right now, L.L.Bean is offering an extra 15 percent off on all discounted items, including a Classic Mountain Parka with khaki, teal, navy and red color blocking, bringing the price down to $50.

Rain or shine

The secret to the Classic Mountain Parka’s functionality lies in its fabric. It is made of Supplex, a nylon fabric with a crinkly texture associated with 1990s windbreakers, that offers exceptional wind and water resistance without chemical treatment.

The hood is simple but effective, featuring a high neck that zips up from the mid-chest. It is adjustable with leather “pig nose” pull cords made from the same cord as the laces on Bean Boots. The pull cord on the zipper matches.

There are only two pockets, but they offer plenty of capacity. A kangaroo pouch has a top-zipper pocket layered over it, which features the same boot lace pull cord.

The Mountain Classic Parka retains its loose, slouchy fit from the 1990s. Not only is this comfortable and in line with modern tastes, but it also promotes airflow through the jacket.

The only downside to the Supplex fabric is that it isn’t breathable, which is great for keeping the wind and rain out, but not for regulating body temperature. The loose fit allows for plenty of ventilation when the zipper is pulled down.

Availability and pricing

L.L.Bean’s Spring Sale, offering an additional 15 percent off all already-discounted merchandise, runs until April 14, 2026. The code EXTRA15 must be applied at checkout.

Unfortunately, this is the only retro color blocking model on sale right now, but it’s the best one, so I can’t complain. If you prefer a more subtle look, the solid green and solid yellow versions are available for $51 each.

At the time of writing this, all three discounted anoraks are available in every size.
