In this regard, the On Cloudnova Moon not only appears supremely functional but very smart indeed.

At face value, the new shoe, developed in partnership with brand ambassador Zendaya, is On’s first foray into the year’s “it” trend: low-profile sneakers inspired by ballet flats.

Ugg has one. Vans, too.

But the Cloudnova Moon might be the only example out there where utility precedes aesthetics, quietly making it something else entirely: a minimalist, do-it-all travel shoe for busy airports, long roadtrips and spontaneous summer adventures.

The upper, made of engineered mesh, takes on the same lines as On’s best-selling Cloudnova.

Meanwhile, the sculpted sockliner, CloudTec midsole and velcro straps, which replace traditional laces, combine for a compelling travel solution that sits halfway between a slip-on and a running shoe.

Availability and pricing

Available from April 16, the Cloudnova Moon costs $200 and comes in four colorways at launch, “Wolf” gray, “Dew” off-white, “Fig” red and black.
